Want to find out if there is a Party near you? Check the Global House Party list and contact a host. That way, you won't miss out on the National Peace Corps Association's worldwide celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Peace Corps. |
House Cuts Would Include Peace Corps, National Service
A nearly $70 million cut to Peace Corps? Eliminating Americorps? Those are among the items being considered this week as the House of Representatives debates a bill that would take aim at sharply reducing discretionary spending. |
Adopt a Day of Action Advocate
NPCA's National Day of Action in Support of the Peace Corps is only two weeks away.
On March 3rd, we want all members of the community to contact their representatives in Congress. Specific actions will be detailed on March 3rd on the Advocacy News section of the NPCA website. As supporters make phone calls and send emails, a group of volunteer advocates will be on Capitol Hill, holding meetings and taking the same actions.
Another way you can help is to "Adopt an Advocate." By making a special gift of $25, $35 or $50, you will help support the purchase of Day of Action materials and visual aids that our advocates will use, allowing us to greatly enhance the Peace Corps community's exposure on Capitol Hill. Follow this link to make a special donation to adopt a Day of Action advocate. Contact us at advocacy@peacecorpsconnect.org if you want to join us on Capitol Hill on March 3rd.

Do You Have a Heartwarming Story? Do you have a heartwarming Peace Corps story? NPCA is looking for a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer with a special story for a possible national TV interview as part of this program's 50th anniversary coverage. It could be about an experience in the Peace Corps or after you returned. Maybe you recently reconnected with someone from your village or just learned how you changed an individual's life or a community years ago.
NPCA wants to hear from you, so send us a brief email as soon as possible and tell us your story! |
First 50th Anniversary "Around the World Expo" Slated for Jacksonville, Fla. The First Coast Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (FCRPCV) may be a relatively new group -- founded in 2005 -- but what they lack in age they more than make up in enthusiasm! They're one of the reasons why the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) and the Peace Corps chose Jacksonville, Fla. as the site of the first Around the World Expo, to be held there on Sunday, Feb. 27.
This Expo is one of nine regional events nationwide that will highlight the contributions of Peace Corps volunteers and celebrate the Peace Corps' 50th anniversary. |
Peace Corps Director Responds to NPCA Safety and Security Query Last month, we reported that on January 20, NPCA Board Chair Jan Guifarro and NPCA President Kevin Quigley sent a letter to Peace Corps Director Aaron Williams asking for information on specific actions being taken to address recently raised concerns about Peace Corps Volunteer safety, and the agency's response when Volunteers are harmed. NPCA received a response from the Director on the following day, which you can read on the Volunteer Safety and Security page of our website.

Be a Classroom Speaker with Speakers Match
As part of Peace Corps' 50th Anniversary celebration, NPCA is working to identify Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who have shared their Peace Corps experience through the Speakers Match program and are willing to share that third goal experience with other RPCVs.
What's Speakers Match? It's a Peace Corps program that brings RPCVs into classrooms to present their service experiences with students.
Lithuania RPCV Michael Blasi has done it and would do it again. "I would hope the sharing of my stories to an audience would open a door," says Blasi, who may have already helped to inspire a new generation of Peace Corps hopefuls.
Merrie McIvor, a Spanish teacher at Chelmsford High School in Massachusetts has done it too. McIvor, who has been hosting Boston area RPCVs in her classroom for years and whose own daughter served in Panama, wants more teachers to know that a unique opportunity is available to them this school year.
Celebrate the 50th. Sign up for Speakers Match and help carry out the third goal.

Colorado RPCVs Pilot Innovative Cookstove Project Sometimes the best ideas happen outside the office--not that the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Colorado (RPCVCO) has an office. But that's part of the back-story for the groups' Clean Cookstove Project, a first-of-its-kind undertaking by an RPCV group that connects a U.S.-based development NGO with serving Peace Corps Volunteers in El Salvador to provide local communities with the necessary training to produce inexpensive, clean and efficient cookstoves.... |
