Bring Peace through Food into your Classroom on March 1

New NPCA Logo

The Peace Corps is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011. To honor the five decades of service, communities around the world are hosting a series of Global House Parties on March 1, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Peace Corps by President John F. Kennedy.

To coincide with those events, NPCA invites educators to join in the commemoration by integrating the House Party theme of food security in their classrooms - on March 1 or at any time throughout the year. This Peace through Food kit provides background on the food security theme, teaching suggestions for different grade levels and action steps to maximize your impact in making the world more food secure for all.

For other resources on the theme of food security (including two short videos), visit our website.   Share ideas with other educators on our discussion forum.  To connect with a returned Peace Corps Volunteer as a speaker in your classroom, use Speakers Match (read below).  Happy Anniversary, Peace Corps!

Peace,
Anne Baker

Vice President, NPCA

ps - if you are attending the ASCD conference in San Francisco next month, be sure to attend our session on "Bringing the World into your School" on Monday, March 28 at 12:15 in the Moscone Center.

March 1 is Approaching:  Sign up for Speakers Match

As part of Peace Corps' 50th Anniversary celebration, NPCA is working to identify RPCVs who have shared their Peace Corps experience through the Speakers Match program and are willing to share that third goal experience with other RPCVs.

What's Speakers Match?  It brings Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) into classrooms to present their service experiences with students.

Lithuania RPCV Michael Blasi has done it would do it again.  "I would hope the sharing of my stories to an audience would open a door or show someone a door," says Blasi, who may have already helped to inspire a new generation of Peace Corps hopefuls.

Merrie McIvor, a Spanish teacher at Chelmsford High School in Massachusetts, has done it, too.  McIvor, who has been hosting Boston area RPCVs in her classroom for years and whose daughter served in Panama, wants more teachers to know that a unique opportunity is available to them this school year.

Celebrate the 50th. Sign up for Speakers Match and help bring the world back home.
