Commemorative Legislation Heads to the House Floor

With more than 50 co-sponsors, legislation authorizing a commemorative to mark the historic significance of the founding of the Peace Corps and the ideals and values of Peace Corps service is on its way to the full House of Representatives.  At a July 22nd markup session, the House Natural Resources Committee unanimously approved the legislation.

Take Action with your Congressman/woman:  If your House Rep is not yet a co-sponsor of the legislation, please take the following action:

  • Call the Capitol Hill switchboard (877-851-6437) and ask to be connected to the office of your Congressman/woman.
  • Leave this message: "I am calling to urge Representative _____ to become a co-sponsor of House Bill 4195, legislation to authorize a Peace Corps commemorative to mark the historic significance of the Peace Corps and the ideals and values it represents."
  • If you prefer to send a written message, follow this link to send an email to your representative.  Include your thoughts on why you believe the founding of the Peace Corps is worthy of recognition.

August Actions to Support President's Peace Corps Funding Request

In Milwaukee and Chicago, plans are underway for district office meetings to urge congressional support for President Obama's Peace Corps funding request for Fiscal Year 2011.  As Congress is adjourned for its summer recess and many members are back home, now is a good time to meet and make the case for continued support for the Peace Corps.

While the House of Representatives appears ready to support the President's request of $446 million for the Peace Corps, that may not be the case in the Senate.  Recent action by the Senate Appropriations Committee recommended only $420 million for the agency.  Current funding for the Peace Corps stands at $400 million.

Submit Your Testimonial Today for Universal Basic Education

For Peace Corps Volunteers who worked on education in the field, now is your time to make a mark on efforts to advance universal basic education in advance of a key international meeting this September.

This year NPCA made universal basic education one of our top advocacy priorities. We want you to take action now by sharing your valuable Peace Corps experience. Read an appeal from the Global Campaign for Education-U.S. and instructions on how to submit your testimony.

Roger Lewis Hearing
Featured Advocates: Roger Lewis and Bonnie Gottlieb - Washington, DC

As advocacy for a Peace Corps commemorative legislation (H.R. 4195) continues, RPCVs Roger Lewis and Bonnie Gottlieb have been instrumental in the progress to date.  Both Board Members of the Peace Corps Commemorative Foundation (PCCF), they have devoted dozens of volunteer hours drafting the House legislation, working on briefing papers and attending meetings with congressional offices.

After earning a degree in architecture from MIT, Roger joined the Peace Corps in Tunisia in 1964, where he served as an architect for the Tunisian Ministry of Public Works.  He is now combining his life-long career and love for architecture with his passion for the Peace Corps.  With unique understanding of the nation's capital and its monumental core, Roger (pictured above) represented the Peace Corps community by testifying at a June 24th public hearing on the commemorative.  Roger says as an architect, advocacy is an integral part of the job, through listening and working with others and eventually convincing them to accept a design idea.  "For architects," he says, "advocacy is natural, and for RPCV architects it's even more natural."

Bonnie served as an English teacher in Côte d'Ivoire in the early 1970's.  Upon returning to the U.S., she went to law school, practiced law for 20 years in commercial real estate transactional work, and then moved on to association management.  She has volunteered with several organizations to advance opportunities for women in the workplace.  While she would support this bill even if she was not an RPCV, Bonnie says her Peace Corps experience has strengthened her passion for this commemorative, which will represent the Peace Corps ideals and values she continues to live out.  She is hopeful that H.R. 4195 will pass soon, saying, "I strongly believe in the lasting significance of the commemorative, and look forward to the day when we break ground on our very own site near the Washington Mall."
