New WorldView Lesson Plan: Compassion and Kindness

Summer 2010 WorldView CoverThe Summer 2010 issue of WorldView magazine is now out, featuring how the Peace Corps community is "bringing the experience home." Using the article "Letter from Lesotho: Compassion in Action" by Kaye Thompson along with online media, Angene Wilson challenges students to practice two time-honored virtues that are essential to the proliferation of a more peaceful world. The lesson, Compassion and Kindness, explores how these virtues are defined across cultures, and encourages students to consider how to live them out in their daily lives.

A subscription to WorldView magazine is included with a membership in the National Peace Corps Association. Click here to learn more about the magazine or here to subscribe. You will find previous lesson plans and discussion guides for each issue of the magazine here.

Help EdSteps to Assess Global Competence

Posted by request:

EdSteps (www.edsteps.org), is a Web-based resource being developed from the ground up that will give teachers, students, and parents a way to compare a student's work with that of other students. Using student work samples that are reviewed by people like you and then placed along a continuum (a gradual progression), EdSteps will illustrate how an individual student can improve.

The continuum's success requires thousands of submissions that represent work at every ability level. You can submit student work (which qualifies you immediately for a drawing for a $150 gift card), and you can sign up to review work. Right now EdSteps is accepting work in two areas: Writing and Global Competence. Work samples are welcome from students of all ages and professionals, from the United States and around the world.

You can learn more about EdSteps and sign up to participate at www.edsteps.org. You also can contact info@edsteps.org for more information.

Save the date: ICAF World Children's Festival June 17-19, 2011

Posted by Request:

The World Children's Festival provides children a transformational experience that becomes a touchstone throughout their lives.

Free and open to the public, the festival attracts more than 10,000 attendees in addition to the nearly 1,000 Arts Olympiad winners and their families.

Nearly 200 artists, educators, engineers, entrepreneurs, Olympians, scientists, and technologists host free workshops and activities that show the power of STEAMS education (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and sport) and make the festival a transformative experience for all attendees.

ICAF's Peace through Art approach in The Lancet medical journal provides the educational framework for the development of empathy at the 3-day festival:

  • Health + Environment Day (June 17) - instruction is informational, spotlighting concerns that children share in common

  • Creativity + Imagination Day (June 18) - learning is participatory, invoking children's inherent talents and potential

  • Peace + Leadership Day (June 19) - training is inspirational, encouraging lifelong creativity, nonviolence and health

For more information about the 2011 World Children's Festival, visit the International Child Art Foundation website.
