Education is Priority as Action Week Nears

We are pleased to note that universal basic education was chosen as one of the National Peace Corps Association's 2010 advocacy priorities. As part of this advocacy effort, we're supporting the Global Campaign for Education, which is promoting the kick-off of the 1GOAL: Education for All campaign during their Global Action Week April 19-25.

We encourage you to participate in Global Action Week by taking advantage of their Lesson for All toolkit, which features a collection of lesson plans and activities that you can use to raise awareness of the global education crisis and get people involved in advocating for education for all.

If you are interested in further supporting this effort you can join our Education for All Advocates group on our Connected Peace Corps social networking site, where updates about activities and events will be posted regularly. To join the group, follow this link.

Legislation regarding Education for All will be introduced in Congress later this month, so look out for more information on how to take action in the next few weeks. If you live in the D.C. area, there will be a Capitol Hill kick-off event during the day on April 21st to mark the introduction of the Education for All Act, featuring Congresswoman Nita Lowey, actress Jessica Alba and others. If you are interested in attending this kick-off event, please contact advocintern@peacecorpsconnect.org. Thank you for your support!

Peace,

The Choices Program's Summer Leadership Institute
Competing Visions of Human Rights

Over the past several decades, human rights discourse has permeated international relations. Yet while the general principle of human rights has been broadly accepted, human rights abuses persist and the intricacies of the subject remain hotly contested.

While in attendance at Brown University's Watson institute for International Studies, participants will learn from leading scholars in the fields of international law and foreign policy, and will explore effective instructional strategies for engaging in the topic of human rights.

Nominate a Fellow for Global Citizen Year

Right now there are thousands of high school seniors across the country wondering what they'll study in college, what to do with their lives and how they might one day solve some of the challenges of our time.

Global Citizen Year is an opportunity for these students to spend a year before college, engaging in communities around the world, learning a new language and using their skills to make a difference.  GCY Fellows enter college with a sense of themselves and the world - empowered to think critically about the problems we face.

We have launched a national search for HS seniors to join our 2010 Corps, and... we need dedicated supporters like you to make it happen!
