Global Connections Update
As we move
into the second half of the school year, the Global Connections program is continuing to make
strides in its mission to improve the "global literacy" of students. We want you to know that you can still sign up for Global
Connections and take advantage of this free resource for the remainder of the
school year. Each week, you'll receive new articles featuring a particular
person, country, and current issues that are significant to the subject of globalization.

Over the coming months, a team of 'Master Teachers' will work on providing educators with frameworks for using Global
Connections materials in the classroom. We are also setting up a social networking space where participants can share their ideas.
For more information about the Global Connections program or to sign up, visit our website or email teachnet@peacecorpsconnect.org.

Help name the "we all" posters and win a set!
A special opportunity for our Global TeachNet group on Connected Peace Corps
The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Wisconsin-Madison invite you to
help us select the titles for our new set of 'we all' posters. To see
the first set of posters, go to http://rpcvmadison.org/weall.php.
The first set, published in winter 2009, have been purchased by
teachers of grades K-12, by day care centers, and internationally by
teachers of English as a Foreign Language and Peace Corps training
centers. As a display of photos from countries where Peace Corps
volunteers have served, the posters are great classroom tools to help
promote multicultural awareness, as well as beautiful images for your
home or office wall.
Learn more here, but act fast - the deadline is this Sunday, January 17.

Fourth International Conference on Ethnomathematics
The Fourth
International Conference on Ethnomathematics will be held July 25-30 at Towson University,
near Baltimore, Maryland. The conference will include
scholarly presentations, posters, cultural events, and at least one
excursion. Anyone with an interest in the interaction between mathematics
and cultures is invited to participate. Some of the topics may include
mathematics in non-Western traditional cultures, mathematics in occupational
cultures, sociological and/or political aspects of mathematics, using
mathematics from other cultures in the classroom, seeking mathematics in the
cultures of students, and other aspects. A trip to the National Museum
of the American Indian in Washington
is planned for July 30, to look at mathematics in American Indian
culture. Earlier ICEMs were held in Spain,
Brazil, and New Zealand,
so this fourth conference is in a fourth continent and especially convenient
for North American participation. Inexpensive accommodation is being
arranged in the university residence halls and other rooms will be available in
the university conference center and nearby hotels.
More information
about the conference, presentation proposals, accommodation, and registration
can be found at http://ICEM-4.org
or by email to Lawrence Shirley at LShirley@towson.edu
