EdSteps: A Call for Work Demonstrating Global Competency
You are invited to participate in an exciting new initiative
to support the high quality teaching and assessment of college and
career-readiness skills in schools. EdSteps
is collecting samples of work as part of a ground breaking effort to assess
student performance using real examples of work done by students and
professionals from across the nation and throughout the world. EdSteps seeks
work that demonstrates global competency:the knowledge, skills and
disposition to understand and act creatively on issues of global significance.
EdSteps will publish the work online to show examples of global competency at
various levels of expertise. Once the work is published, it will help teachers
strengthen instruction and better evaluate student work and provide examples
for students to help them strive for greater achievement. Please visit our
website www.edsteps.org for more
information and to start submitting work today.

Curriculum Update from the Choices Program
South Africa's Struggle
December 16 is a significant date in South African history. From 1910 to 1994,
the day was a public holiday to commemorate the victory of trekboers over a
force of Zulus in the Battle of Blood River in 1838. Years later, the African
National Congress launched its armed wing-Mkhonto we Sizwe-on December
16, to use force to oppose the apartheid government. Since 1994, South Africans
have celebrated the country's reconciliation and unity on December 16, now
called the Day of Reconciliation.
Bring the rich history of South
Africa and the struggle against apartheid to
your students with the new edition of Freedom in Our Lifetime: South Africa's Struggle. The updated curriculum includes two new lessons in which students explore
South African history through primary source materials.
