Global TeachNet and ASCD

Did you know that with over 175,000 members in 119 countries, ASCD is an educational leadership organization dedicated to advancing best practices and policies for the success of each learner?  Did you also know that our NPCA network, Global TeachNet (GTN), has been ASCD's Global Education Network since 1998?

The stated goals of the ASCD Global Education Network (GEN) are to:
  • Develop and sustain communication on global and multicultural perspectives and initiatives
  • Provide programming and resources for global education and play an advocacy role in support of the same
  • Provide a vehicle for mutual assistance, allowing members to share information about models and best practices, challenges, and solutions
Our current efforts are focused on the third stated goal above.  Please join our social networking group at http://community.peacecorpsconnect.org/group/globalteachnet!  (For those who cannot access our Ning-based system, stay tuned for a change to a new platform in the coming months.)  Share your ideas, questions and recommendations here.  We look forward to seeing you online.

Peace,
Anne Baker
Vice President, NPCA
Co-facilitator, ASCD GEN

Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is now taking reservations for an environmentally focused winter trip to Panama with the dates December 20th, 2009-January 2nd, 2010. GEEO is also happy to announce summer travel programs to India, Peru, Tunisia, Southern Africa (South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe) and China.

Educators can earn graduate school credit and professional development credit while seeing the world. The trips are designed for teachers and include activities such as school visits and homestays that give participants authentic exposure to local culture. The trips are deeply discounted so as to be affordable to teachers. GEEO also helps teachers find funding to subsidize the cost of the trips.

Detailed information about each trip, including itineraries, costs, travel dates, and more can be found at www.geeo.org. GEEO can also be reached 7 days a week, toll free at 1-877-600-0105 between 9AM-10PM EST. To sign-up for GEEO's listserv, please send an email to listserv@geeo.org with the subject line "subscribe."

New Textbook on Sustainability from Facing the Future

Are you interested in global sustainability?  Do you think it should be taught in schools?  As a part of social studies?

Facing the Future, a nonprofit education organization, is developing a high school textbook on sustainability. We're looking for your input so we can create something that will be useful for the widest possible range of educators.

The text will include an exploration of sustainability linked with major global issues such as population, environment, consumption, conflict, quality of life and poverty, while preparing students to be participatory citizens and engage in meaningful solutions. It will include positive real-world examples, emphasize critical thinking, and illustrate systems interconnections.

We want to know what kind of text will be most helpful for you in your school. Thank you for taking a couple of minutes to answer these 9 brief questions.
