New Math Curriculum with Real World Data on Global Issues

Posted by request:

Facing the Future is pleased to announce the release of Real World Math: Engaging Students through Global Issues. This two-part math resource engages students in learning foundational algebra and geometry through real-world data on global issues. The teacher's guide and corresponding student workbook contain 15 lessons on topics such as climate change, population, and financial literacy. Each lesson in the teacher's guide includes:
  • A complete lesson plan including an activity based 'hook' to engage students
  • Masters for student lesson handouts
  • Masters for practice worksheets
All lessons were inspired, researched, designed, reviewed, and pilot tested by educators in the field.

"Using 'real world' ideas in math made math meaningful to [students]-they seemed to really care more about the math problems they were working."
- Math Teacher, Georgia

The remarkable richness and endurance of Chinese civilization will be the central focus for this online course, which will explore the long period from the emergence of China's earliest civilizations to the end of the dynastic phase in 1911. The online course will feature supplemental readings, scholar podcasts, and web-based activities to engage teachers in some of the most current scholarship, while exploring student-friendly tools and resources. This course will be offered completely online and will require a basic comfort level and interest in the use of computer technology as a medium for learning.

Just Eating? Practicing our Faith at the Table Curriculum

Posted by request:

Just Eating? Practicing Our Faith at the Table explores how faith is foundational to meaningful and healthy living, for ourselves, for the earth and for others in the world. Just Eating? will help young people better understand the relationship between faith and food. This curriculum will look at four interconnected aspects of our lives with food:
  • How food choices affect our health
  • How our choices affect the earth
  • How our choices affect others
  • How we use food to create friend and family bonds with others.

Just Eating? was developed as a joint project of the Presbyterian Hunger Program, Advocate Health Care, and Church World Service.

Order or download both the Middle School and Adult Versions at pcusa.org/food/resources.
