Africa Rural Connect Announces 2nd Round Winners

At noon EST on September 15th, Round 2 of the Africa Rural Connect contest came to a close, and three winners were awarded cash prizes to implement their plans for the development of rural Africa.

Congratulations to our three 2nd Round winners! All three will be entered into the Grand Prize Pool in November, when our judges will select one project to receive $20,000 in funding.

To listen to the three winning contributors give detailed explanations of their award-winning ideas and inspiration check out the official ARC "Round 2 Winners" Update.

Want to know more about Africa Rural Connect? Listen to Project Manager, Molly Mattessich, discuss the project on a recent interview with Voice of America or check out the site yourself at www.AfricaRuralConnect.org.

Remember, Round 2 may be over, but Round 3 has just begun and will be running until October 15th. So, bring your insight, experiences, and ideas to help build viable plans towards the development of rural Africa!

Aaron Williams Sworn in as Peace Corps Director

This morning the Peace Corps hosted a ceremonial swearing in for the new Peace Corps Director, Aaron S. Williams (Dominican Republic 67-70).  Sen. Harris Wofford administered the oath of office before an audience of family, friends and colleagues.  Williams was officially sworn in on August 24.  (Read the Peace Corps press release here.  Read NPCA's blog posting on the August confirmation hearing here.)

In his remarks, the new Director said that it was a rare opportunity to be able to give back to an organization that has given him so much.  He also noted that "Returned Peace Corps Volunteers are our best recruiters," and vowed to work closely with the Returned Peace Corps community.

Senate Co-Sponsors of Peace Corps Legislation Start to Rise

Majority Leader Harry Reid (NV) and fellow Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) and Jay Rockefeller (WV) are the latest co-sponsors of the Peace Corps Improvement and Expansion Act (S. 1382), legislation introduced by RPCV Senator Chris Dodd (Dominican Republic 66-68).

Along with authorizing a doubling of funding for Peace Corps over the next three years, the legislation would require a strategic assessment to address a number of matters that are viewed as key to advancing the Peace Corps.

We need more co-sponsors!  Follow this link for a letter writing action.  Alternatively, you can call the U.S. Capitol toll free (877-851-6437), ask to be connected to the office of your Senator and leave this message: "I'm calling to urge Senator ____ to become a co-sponsor of the Peace Corps Improvement and Expansion Act." first three co-sponsors of the bill.  Take action with your Senators to build support for this legislation.
