Global TeachNet Fall Newsletter

Through Global TeachNet, educators find the resources, networking and support they need to bring a global perspective into classrooms and communities. The Global TeachNet News quarterly newsletter for September, October and November, will go out around September 1.  If you have any lessons, articles, or resources you'd like to share, please let us know! If you're not familiar with the Global TeachNet newsletter, please visit our website for more information and to see past issues.

Want to infuse a more global perspective in your classroom?  Well with the start of Fall and students returning to school, this is an exciting time to share ideas and articles on such topics as World Food Day, The United Nations International Day of Peace (September 21), Columbus Day/Dia de la Raza, and International Education Week (November 16-20, 2009).  As always, we are looking for resources on these topics as well as general resources, book reviews, etc.

Send all contributions to the Global TeachNet newsletter editor, Susan Neyer, at [email protected] by August 21st. Global TeachNet is the global education program of the National Peace Corps Association.

How Green is my School?

Forwarded by a subscriber:

"How Green is My Town?" is a grassroots effort to empower citizens and local decision makers to address the issues of climate change, sustainability, and environmental health at the local level. The Web site functions as a national clearinghouse of the best programs, ideas, and policies, as well as product solutions where appropriate.

"How Green is My Town?" challenges schools to become more actively involved in the movement of "going green."  Whether through recycling, transportation or energy use, schools and teachers can make a difference.  This site allows you to see how you measure up to other schools. Another tool on this site is a comprehensive school environmental policy which covers energy use, green procurement, green cleaning, green buildings, transportation, grounds maintenance, environmental toxins, recycling and communications.
"Building Blocks of Peace" Teaching Resources

Posted by request:

The Institute for Economics and Peace recently released the third annual Global Peace Index.  The "Building Blocks of Peace" is a downloadable lesson plan for educators offering teaching material which surrounds global peace.  The materials are available free of charge at www.economicsandpeace.org

Unlike traditional peace education materials, these modules go beyond conflict resolution to explore the broader meaning of global peace and its impact on our daily lives. By working through each module and the extensive supporting information provided, students will learn how to define peace for themselves and gain an understanding of the key factors that encourage peaceful society.

For the release of the first Global Peace Index in 2007 inspired an article in NPCA's WorldView magazine, "Pax Metrics."  In response, Angene Wilson developed a lesson plan for a Global Peace Summit that can easily be applied for use with this year's index.
UNICEF Video Contest for Children's Rights

Deadline extended to 30 August 2009.

It's the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention just for them because people under 18 years old are often neglected in the human rights debate.  CRC is the world's most widely ratified human rights treaty. It spells out the basic human rights that children everywhere have: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life.

Take a look at the CRC leaflet (PDF). Then make a video showing what child rights mean to you, whether it be in the world at large, your country or your community.

The winning video will be used in the CRC's 20th anniversary celebration and made available for broadcast around the world for the 2010 The International Children's Day of Broadcasting.

Video content must be related to children's rights, either by illustrating one of the rights or referencing children's rights as a whole. Videos must capture the mission of Voices of Youth - to promote and protect every child's right to know more, say more and do more about the world they live in!
