| Hurricane Ike, Salvation Army Harbor Light, & pies..... |
We had the privilege on Monday after Hurricane Ike stuck to be
able to work with our dear friend, Fred Smith, director of Houston's Salvation
Army Harbor Light Men's Center. The center's population during the storm swelled to over 400 men all with
without food & power. JB called Fred's cell Sunday night to
check on him. Fred asked if there was any way we could cook two meals of 400 dinners each on Monday for the men? Fred wasn't sure if they'd get deliveries on Monday and knew that it would only be sandwiches with lunch meats at
the best. If you know Fred, he is pretty soft spoken, un-assuming, & wouldn't ask for a thing..... By 11:00 pm Sunday evening JB & Tara had worked up a menu of Pork Tenderloins, Grilled Chicken Breasts, Black Eye Peas, Corn, Rolls, & Pies. The cafe only had in inventory were rolls & pies, everything had to be bought first thing Monday morning. By 10:00 Monday morning Tara & Rick had bought the inventory. And along with JB & Jamie, who drove in from Austin, kicked out all 800 meals by 2:30 pm. Several guys from the Harbor Light Center, who drove up to pick up the meals, helped to make it all happen! Pretty cool!!! We were so grateful for this opportunity 'cause it really helped us to make up for not being open on Saturday due to the storm. What a joy & privelige it was to watch the kids make this all happen on their own.......
