The Language Arts & Humanities teacher who introduced me to Thoreau retired just 2 months ago. Helen Bedtelyon taught for 40 years and when I say 'taught', I truly mean it in every sense of the word. She is a big part of how I became who I am -and am becoming- and I believe she helped thousands of people learn to chase our potential over those many years. I left her classroom in 1985, though I have never left her tutelage. And even after all of her genuinely fantastic teaching, I still have difficulty finding the words to express how I feel about her.

I hope that you have had a teacher, actual or literal, whom you may look back on, and up to, with genuine love and appreciation. If not, that teacher may be on the way to you and when s/he gets to you, I hope you are ready. As the Buddhist proverb reads: “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”.

As Thoreau was saying: may you live in the moment whenever you can, and taste life full-on.
