So often I find myself hurrying along, trying to get through 'this' in order to get to 'that', and then get through the next one as well. I am almost always enjoying myself, it is just that sometimes I forget to enjoy the journey, which is the point of everything, after all.
Lately I have taken very little time for myself and as I was thinking about what to write this morning I remembered my very favorite poet, Mary Oliver. I lover her poetry because it appeals to my soul.
Here is her "Morning Poem", and I offer it to you now. Enjoy each day's journey.
Every morning
the world
is created.
Under the orange
sticks of the sun
the heaped
ashes of the night
turn into leaves again
and fasten themselves to the high branches--
and the ponds appear
like black cloth
on which are painted islands
of summer lilies.
It is your nature
to be happy
You will swim away along the soft trails
for hours, your imagination
alighting everywhere.
And if your spirit carries within it
the thorn
that is heavier than lead--
if it's all you can do
to keep on trudging--
there is still
somewhere deep within you
a beast shouting that the earth
is exactly what it wanted--
each pond with its blazing lilies
is a prayer heard and answered
lavishly,
every morning,
whether or not
you have ever dared to be happy,
whether or not
you have ever dared to pray.
Mary Oliver

You may be thinking "How can I help?"
Here is one small way:
Go to a movie!
Kitsap's own 'Sustainable Cinema' Series is held the last Sunday of each month at the historic Orchard Theater in downtown Port Orchard.
Each movie is only $3 bucks and we can learn more about issues of sustainability and what we can do about them. Thanks to County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido for sponsoring this endeavor!
No matter where we may be on the path to becoming an excellent steward of the earth, we can always learn more. Why not do it together?
