What's new pussycat, whoa whoa whoa!
Does that song bring back any memories for you?
I love music! I have so many personal associations with different songs and styles of music that it is a very real part of my life. (If I could have background singers follow me around everywhere, I would!)
I have more than 2 cases of old cassette tapes that I was never able to throw out, partly from not wanting to add to the landfill, but even more so these tapes are filled with memories and meaning for me. Do you have old tapes that you should probably get rid of?
I have found the perfect place to send them to! An artist by the name of Alyce Santoro has created a wonderful use for our old tapes: she makes fabric out of them! It is called Sonic Fabric, and it is a textile woven from audio cassette tapes. The neatest part of this fabric is that it is audible! If you take a cassette player head, and run it over the fabric, it plays whatever is recorded on the cassettes that are woven into it.
I am so enamored with this art that I want you to bring us all of your old cassette tapes! The entire month of March, we will collect cassette tapes, especially those that hold personal meaning for you, and on the first of April I will send them to Alyce. She will then send them to a women's craft cooperative in Nepal for hand-weaving into fabric.

Come out and play with us for the quarterly Old Town Art Walk on Friday, March 14th, from 6-8 pm.
I don't know who our featured artist is yet, but we will have Chris Hughes of Harmony Artworks downstairs, as well as signed copies of our author's books.
