So here we are in the midst of the 'holiday season', when it is highly fashionable to be on the lookout for big miracles. I try to appreciate small miracles in my life every single day, and sometimes the attention paid to them at this time of year seems almost forced.
And yet, I am deeply touched by stories of hope and help where it is needed, especially at this time of the year.
As I write this it is the first night of Hanukkah, the festival of lights, which is one of my favorite miracle stories.
I cannot help but honor the story of the Maccabees, and their fight against paganism and oppression, even though I am not Jewish. To me the biggest miracle is not that they beat the Greco-Syrians, or that the one-day supply of oil burned in the lamp for 8 days. The biggest miracle, wherein the meaning of Hanukkah truly lies, was proclaimed by the Jewish prophet Zachariah: "Not by might, not by power, but by My Spirit."
My wish to each of you this season is that you experience the miracle of your own Spirit. You can make a difference in your own life, in many other lives, and in the world. Remember to take a cleansing breath now and again, offer yourself a kind smile, then smile at others, even if you are just passing by. Love cannot help but spread, and that is no small miracle.
