Monica & Mark Downen, at your service

September Greetings!

We are getting ready to launch our new website this month, and I really wanted to postpone this newsletter until we were ready, but I can't! There is so much fun stuff going on this month and you need to know about some of it sooner than later, so I just couldn't wait a moment longer!

Speaking of the website, some of you had expressed interest in writing a short testimonial for us to use on our catering, or other pages. If any of you would do that, it would mean the world to us! It does not need to be long or involved, just a sentence or two telling us why you love the cafe', or a certain service that you were provided. We need it to be in writing, have your name on it, and a quick line of permission for us to use it. Email works fine, or you can drop it off at the cafe'. Thank you very much to those of you who brought it up!

I have really noticed this last week of August that, in spite of the warm sun and clear skies, there is a bit of an autumnal chill just starting to be in the air. This means that we are approaching my favorite time of year! The skies are bluer, the trees will begin to turn colors, the harvest season brings us new and wonderful produce, and even the air smells better.

In the cafe' we will be having more pumpkin soups and apples will be abundant in desserts and salads. Mushrooms, carrots, late onions and squash will all be coming out of the ground and many of them will be brought to us by our organic farmer, Paul Gregory, of Gregory's Produce.

We usually have gorgeous weather in the fall and there is still enough daylight to have fun! We will soon be building our winter nests and getting cozy indoors, so get outside and enjoy this gorgeous place we live as often as you can!

NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Book Signing: Saturday, September 8, 1-3 pm
Sarah Nilson will be upstairs at the cafe' with copies of her new book "Does This Book Make My Butt Look Big? (And Who Cares Anyway It's My Butt!)". Join us for lively conversation and you can purchase a book, or bring your own copy, for her to sign!

Old Town quarterly Art Walk: Friday, September 14, 6-8 pm

Many of the Old Town businesses get together for this night of sensory pleasures! There is wine tasting and free flowers, and lots of different art to see.
At the cafe' we will have artists upstairs and down, as well as 2 local authors with copies of their books available. Poet Ellen Elizabeth and Kitsap Sun columnist and author Sally Santana will both be keeping me in fine company that evening!
As always we will offer complimentary coffee and we will be taking donations for the food bank! Bring cash, canned foods, and toiletries to donate, and you will get one of our world famous shortbread cookies!

4-course Wine Dinner Saturday, September 22, at 6 pm

As always you will be greeted with a light reception of lovely nibbles and something bubbly in your glass! Each of the first three courses will be served with fabulous wines brought to us by Small Vineyards Imports, and the dessert course will be served with our wonderful House Blend coffee.

Antipasti
Sharp and tangy Locally made Cheese with sweet and tart Washington Apples

Primi
Organic Carrots will be perfectly roasted, lightly dressed and seasoned, topped with Chevre and toasted Pumpkin Seeds

Secondi
Succulent Pork Loin drizzled with a Blackberry-Zinfandel reduction, and perched atop a pillowy mound of Yukon Gold Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Dolce
Mark's famous Apple Strudel, served warm and accompanied by Olympic Mountain Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

The cost for the dinner is $75 per person, which includes tax and gratuity.
Reservations are required.
HAVE YOU MET SHARON?

That's Lori, in the pink!

Sharon is our retail manager and she keeps us all in line. She does most of the ordering, keeps supplies stocked and organized, opens the cafe' on weekdays, and rules us all with an iron fist! Ok, maybe the fist is more like silly putty than iron... but she has helped us figure out all kinds of stuff in this first 16 months of operations, and we are so very grateful to have her as part of our family. One of my most favorite things about Sharon is her laugh! No matter what is happening in my day, if I hear her burst out with that beautiful laugh it makes me smile. So the next time you come in tell her a joke, so the rest of us can smile!
