Photography Business An Early Passion For Mangiante

Rosalind Guy, Reporter, Memphis Daily News

"Some teenagers spend years trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives once they graduate from high school. For Gene Mangiante, it seems his path was determined long before he earned a diploma. While he was a student at Christian Brothers High School, he began taking photos for the yearbook and newspaper. Shortly after that he launched his own business of sorts."

    Spring Sports Season is Here!

    Philip Powis, Account Manager

This week marks the official arrival of spring in Memphis, as well as across the country. With the great weather and without the sweltering heat that summer will eventually bring, there is no better time for your family to get active! With a little encouragement from mom and dad, children will leave behind their video game consoles and head to the ballpark. It may be difficult at first for your child to choose a sport from the dozens of possibilities, but it is important to consider his or her personality and interests. Assertive children may be better suited for team sports such as soccer and basketball, while less aggressive children may prefer a sport such as baseball or swimming.

The benefits of getting your children involved in sporting activities are astounding. Research has shown that involvement in sports promotes healthy development, team work and good sportsmanship, as well as refinement of motor skills. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry reports that "sports help children develop physical skills, get exercise, make friends, have fun, learn to play as a member of a team, learn to play fair and improve self- esteem."

One of the easiest and most rewarding ways to get your child involved is to consider organized youth sports leagues. It is estimated that 22 million children ages 6 to 18 are involved in organized sports outside of school. Working for a company that is heavily invested in working with youth sports teams, I can tell you that there is no shortage of opportunity in the greater Memphis area. One suggestion to finding the right place for your child is to check offerings with the school, city parks and churches. Also, ask your friends, family and co-workers for ideas or referral to opportunities where their children have had a positive experience.

Have fun exploring all the possibilities with your child, and don't forget to get off the couch and get involved yourself! Share in the excitement by getting volunteering as a coach or by simply spending time practicing with your child and sharing words of encouragement!

    The Persistence of Memory

    Michael Spikes, Operations Manager

Below you will see a link to an article about the closing of two Polaroid plants. The company will cease the production of the instant film that made it famous for more than 60 years. While the ever-rising tide of digital technology seems to be the reason for the demise of the film, another clue has been revealed. There is a change in the way people view their images.

Digital has made it easier to share images through e- mail and Web sites, but more now than ever, people are not printing their images like they did in years past. I must admit that I too am guilty of this. When I try to think about the future of photography, I wonder at the possibility that my images, my memories, may only exist in the virtual world. I need the print, even if it just reminds me that my experiences of life, love or even hardship were real.

Polaroid will continue in other areas for the future, but more interesting to me is the company's past. The company founder, Edwin Land, attended Harvard University, but he never graduated and was second only to Thomas Edison in patents held. He was not just a leader in science and technology but also in the humanities, paying employees sick pay and holiday bonuses long before the practice was common. The company also received numerous awards from the military for its help during World War II.
