June 1: Art and the InmateA Presentation by Jim Carlson
6:30-8:00pm
Jim
Carlson, art instructor at California State Prison-Sacramento (New
Folsom), will share his experience teaching the arts to inmates.
Carlson is an art educator who has taught in California State Prisons
for 25 years. He will share his experience working with inmates,
supported by video interviews and examples of inmate poetry, music and
visual art. Carlson will explore not only the realities of the inmate's
personal journeys and prison culture, but also the remarkable qualities
of redemption and rehabilitation they have gained through their
exposure to the arts.
"Jim can show gripping
examples of how the arts can reclaim lives," said Beth Rohlfes, Curator
at the Blue Line Gallery. "There is so much to learn in this about the
value of the arts in our prisons as well as in our broader
communities."

June 19: Juried Membership ShowOpening Reception 6:30-9pm Awards Presentation at 7:30
A
variety of 2- and 3-dimensional media will be represented in the
exhibit, including works in photography, painting, mixed media and
metals. The featured artists come from as far away as South Lake Tahoe, Davis and El Dorado Hills and will all be considered for $1000 in cash awards. While awards are not new to Roseville
Arts' previous 37 annual membership shows, this is the first time
members' work has had to be juried into the annual exhibit.
"We
were very honored to be chosen as the jurors for your first juried
membership show," said Pamela Skinner, who with Gwenna Howard owns and
manages the Pamela Skinner/Gwenna Howard/Contemporary Art Gallery in Sacramento.
"We concentrated on the image in front of us and approached the
judging very methodically. We looked very closely at what we thought
the artist tried to accomplish and how successful they were in this
effort." |
