Meet Bingo!
Bingo, affectionately nicknamed "Noodles" for his long legs, is Young at Heart Pet Rescue's 300th senior pet rescued! Found as a stray, malnourished and terrified, Bingo was rescued by Young at Heart from a suburban open-admission shelter where his age made him ineligible for adoption. A very handsome "doodle" dog who is approximately 9 years old, Bingo is probably a cocker spaniel/standard poodle mix. Bingo is named in memory of Bernie "Bingo" Gomolka, an avid pet lover whose memorial donations to Young at Heart directly contributed to the rescue of this beautiful senior boy!

Bingo is a wonderful boy, full of life and happiness. He is good with other dogs, housebroken, and loves to play. Bingo would love nothing more than to snuggle up to you and have you toss a fuzzy toy for him! We don't know much about his history, but he is very scared of being pulled by the collar, so a home where someone can help him learn that he will never have to worry about being hurt again is on his list of needs. His gorgeous little face and his happy demeanor are sure to steal your heart. He is healthy and will be ready to go to his forever home soon! We are accepting applications for Bingo, and because he is our 300th rescue, Bingo will go home with a New Dog Care Package that includes a collar and leash, dog bed, toys, food, and bowls!

Thanks to all of our supporters, friends, adopters, volunteers, and foster homes for helping us save 300 lives! The average age of our adopted pets is now 9.1 years old! Because of you, we have made a difference in the lives of homeless senior pets over the past 5 years, and with your continued support, we will continue to make an even bigger difference!

Going the Extra Mile- Precious Undergoes RadioCat Treatment for Hyperthyroidism

When Precious arrived to Young at Heart in 2009, she was lethargic, she vomited often, she was very arthritic, and her coat was terrible. At 12 years old, she had rarely seen a vet with her former owner, and her condition of hyperthyroidism went undiagnosed and untreated until a geriatric panel at our vet showed just how out of whack her thyroid was. No wonder this poor kitty felt so ill!

Carefully monitoring Precious' thyroid levels while on thyroid medication, it soon became apparent that giving Precious pills twice a day was not an option- she hated pills! So, on the recommendation of our vet, we switched to a medicated gel that was applied to the inside of her ears instead. Alas, that wasn't working either, so our vet suggested an expensive, but permanent alternative to medication- Radioiodine Therapy. After a little research, it was decided that Precious would take a trip to RadioCat in Arlington Heights, IL in the hopes that her Hyperthyroidism would be cured by the treatment.

Precious' treatment plan included a review of records, x-ray interpretation, I-131 injection, daily monitoring, feeding and hospitalization. Because Precious was radioactive, we had to wait 3-5 days before she reached a safe and legal limit of radiation release. For 2 weeks following her treatment, we simply used a special litter and washed our hands after handling her. Precious acted as if she was getting the royal treatment, and purred and talked to us the same as always. It was if she knew a new and improved road lay ahead, and would often roll and purr to greet us each day.

6 weeks later, Precious' thyroid is now within normal limits, eliminating the need for any medication! Although she still has arthritis for which she takes cosequin supplements for, she is otherwise a healthy senior kitty ready to go home! For more information on RadioCat treatment, visit www.radiocat.com!
