A Doggy Makeover: Why You Should Never Judge a Book by its Cover
Last week, Young at Heart rescued a small, senior poodle that had been awaiting rescue at a local pound. Passed by for her younger, more beautiful counterparts, this little girl sat and waited. Her hair was matted, she was filthy and was a smell to behold. Her age, her hair, her smell- none of that was her fault. But yet she sat in a cage awaiting her fate until we agreed to take her into our rescue.

Bitsy, fresh from the pound- Before her Makeover.
Affectionately being called "Medusa" because of her hair, Sheri Berliner of Petraits pulled this little girl for us while she was at the pound taking photos, and Gloria at Happy Tails Grooming spent hours on her. When Gloria was finished, the results were wonderful, and if we had placed Medusa back in that shelter's cage, she would have been adopted in minutes. All because she looked like a different dog. But she wasn't. She simply needed some old-fashioned TLC!

With Medusa's makeover in place, it was time for a new name for her new start- "Bitsy". Bitsy, a whopping 3.5 pound poodle, is now being treated for an infection and multiple parasites, and when she is stable enough, will get a much needed dental to pull out several rotten, painful teeth. She will then be placed for adoption with the perfect home.
Was Bitsy a diamond in the rough? No. She was simply a victim of a throw-away society, and overlooked again and again because of her age and miserable condition. Young at Heart pulls dogs just like Bitsy from death row over and over, and the result is always the same- under that matted coat, terrible smell, and minor medical needs, a wonderful pet awaits. Because of your support, we are able to save overlooked senior dogs just like Bitsy, give them the care they need, and find them the happily ever after that they deserve.
Thanks to Sheri Berliner of Petraits for helping get Bitsy to safety and for taking pictures of her Makeover experience!

Thanks, Volunteers, for Making a Difference!
Last weekend we paid tribute to our core volunteers, and those volunteers who worked more than 20 hours for Young at Heart in 2009. Held at Gino's East in Rolling Meadows, are volunteers were treated to pizza, open bar (for those 21 of course!), desserts, and a thank you gift.
"Humane Heart" awards were given to the following businesses for their outstanding support of the rescue and rehoming of senior pets, and for their dedication to Young at Heart:
A Closer Bond Dog Training
Best Friends Pet Care
Chasin' Our Tails
Windschant Kennels
The Weiner Foundation
Our 2009 Foster Home of the Year award went to Barb Urquhart who has been one of the biggest advocates for our senior pets. She has fostered 17 dogs so far, often fostering two or three at a time, and is sure to make every event with her adoptable canine charges. She is a true asset to Young at Heart. Thanks, Barb!
We also awarded many Junior Volunteer Awards- the future of our rescue! We're very proud of our kids!
Our Volunteers are the reason why we can accomplish so much, and we thank each and every one fo them from the bottom of our "Heart". Thank you, volunteers!
New Volunteers always welcome!

Help us find them homes!

Maggie has been waiting for a home for over 1 year now. Please help us find a home for Maggie! Good with cats, housebroken, playful but loves to lounge around the house. She is still waiting because she does not get along with other dogs.
Winter has been waiting for a home for over 3 years now. She is good with other cats, tolerates dogs, and is good with her litterbox. Wary of strangers, she still waits for a home because she can bite when a new person pushes her too fast. Sweet and affectionate with those she loves, she knows her "person" is out there ! | |
