Happy New Year!
A look back and a look forward!

2010 marks a wonderful milestone for Young at Heart- our 5th Birthday! Yes, five whole years have gone by since we put our first paw forward towards rescuing and rehoming senior dogs and cats in the Chicagoland area. How time flies when you're saving lives!

This past year has been one of hardship for a lot of rescues. Many smaller rescues had to close their doors due to financial difficulties, but thanks to you, our supporters, we are still going strong. Over 80 senior pets were rescued in 2009, and we have now rescued a total of over 285 senior dogs and cats from euthanasia. A small number compared to those organizations that adopt out puppies and kittens, but when you see that the average age of our adoptables is on average between 8 -9 years old, 285 is simply a wonderful number to celebrate! And our goal for 2010 is simple- save more lives.

2009 also saw the start of Nina's Pet Food Pantry, a branch of Young at Heart that stocks the shelves of two food pantries with pet food and pet necessities to help families keep their beloved pets during these trying times. The response was overwhelming- we donated over 25,000 pounds of food, litter, toys, and other pet items to these two food pantries in 2009!

This year, we expect to celebrate our 300th adoption in the next few months! We have a very special treat planned for whomever that special somebody is who adopts our 300th rescued pet. We have some new fundraisers coming up, and some oldies but goodies as well will be back again. Young at Heart was also very lucky to receive three wonderful grants for 2010 from the Weiner Foundation, The DAS Fund, and from the Pedigree Foundation to help us continue our mission.

As we move into 2010, we hope you will make it part of your resolution to continue to help senior dogs and cats, whether it be by fostering, volunteering, donating, adoption, or simply spreading the word about Young at Heart. Thank you for a successful 2009, and we look forward to making 2010 even more successful.

Happy New Year!
