Socks Total

The Chamber wants to extend their congratulations to Bill Doell of the University Masonic Lodge and Sgt. Newsom of the Seattle Police Department for excelling their goal of collecting socks for the homeless. This year total count of socks collected was 4,628 compared to last year count of 1,800. Of the 4,628 collected, 3,432 socks were gathered from the University District Community. Not bad! We also had 222 pair of gloves (190 from us), scarves and hats purchased with donated funds. The Greater University Chamber of Commerce wants to thank the businesses and individuals who contribute to the socks collection for the homeless program.

University Heights
Center

Constructed in 1902

Last summer restoration commenced at University Heights Center, an architecturally significant structure in the heart of the University District.  The building was constructed in 1902; its doors officially opened in December of that year just in time for children to celebrate the holidays. Today we learned that University Heights has been designated by the National Park Service as a landmark property and placed upon the National Register of Historic Places.  This approval is meaningful to the Center and thousands of individuals who fought for its preservation for more than thirty years. "School buildings have historically been very important to the neighborhoods they serve, said House Speaker Frank Chopp, who has his district office in University Heights. This designation acknowledges that role and allows the building to remain a vital part of the community." The designation assures preservation of the building and site under federal laws which protect architecturally significant properties. It is the perfect way for University Heights to celebrate its 108th birthday which occurs this month.

Thank You all for your continued support! If you have any events, questions, or just want to chat, our door is always open.

Sincerely,

Teresa Lord Hugel
