Happy November From Your Greater University Chamber

November 2010

Greetings!

We appreciate your involvement and interest in the U District Chamber and community news. In an effort to conserve paper, limit costs, and increase overall efficiency, GUCC newsletters and announcements will be distributed primarily in an online format.

We would be happy to add anyone to our email address list if they contact us at programs@udistrictchamber.org.

UW vs. UCLA

Thursday, November 18th, 2010, Kickoff at 5:00 PM

For tickets to the game please click here.

As you may have heard, the University of Washington is hosting a football game against the UCLA Bruins on Thursday, November 18. This game will be broadcast live nation-wide on what we hope will be a beautiful November evening. Of course, it will also be a weekday evening, which means traffic will be challenging with approximately 70,000 fans added to the typical commute. Montlake Boulevard and NE 45th Street will be unusually congested. The game starts at 5PM and peak traffic is predicted to occur 3 to 4 hours before kickoff.

Thanks again...

Thanks again to Aaron for the incredible menu last evening.  The food was amazing.

Thanks to Hotel Deca for making it all look professional and inviting.

Thanks to Louse for getting the sign pulled together and for keeping us on track.

Thanks to Teresa for the pretty emails and invites and the PA System.

Thanks to the farmers and Steppe Cellars for their amazing wines.

Thanks again to the University Farmers Market for their part in this event.

NOVEMBER 16 LUNCHEON
THANKSGIVING 2010

We welcome Joe Gruber from the U District Food Bank and Bill Doell from the University Masonic Lodge as our featured presenters for this annual special ThanksGIVING event.  Each year the Chamber focuses its November meeting on a giving campaign in our community.  The economy has put many individuals from all walks of life at dire straights.  This is a way you can help and still have a good networking opportunity with your business neighbors.

We are asking all who attend to bring a food donation for the Food Bank and/or a pair of warm socks for the "Socks for the Homeless" drive (see below).  I am sure that $ would also be appreciated.

Socks For The Homeless

This year goal is 6,000 pair of socks.

Socks for homeless was started by Sgt. Newsom, SPD, several years ago. Last year the organization collected over 1800 new pair of socks with 1300 donated by the University Masonic Lodge. Other contributors include University Chamber, Shultzy's, JCPenney, Fred Meyer and Costco. This year our goal is to collect 6000 pair of socks to be donated to various charities. Seen in the photo is Sgt. Newsom and Bill Doell, University Chamber Director with the first several pair of donated socks & gloves. The Chamber needs the community assistances to help the University Masonic Lodge in achieving the goal of collecting 6000 pair of socks by November 15th, 2010. If you are interested in donating to this cause, please bring your donations to the Greater University Chamber of Commerce.

EVENT AT THE U DISTRICT FARMERS MARKET

Now in its 5th year, in partnership with the Chamber, University Heights, and the U District Farmers Market, the City of Seattle will donate trimmings from the Cedar River Watershed so that folks in the U District can make swags and wreaths FOR FREE at the Farmers Market on Saturday, December 4th from 9-noon.  Bring your kids or your parents and have a great family expereince.

To make it even more fun, we are asking local merchants to donate ribbons, ornaments and other fun stuff to help make extra special decorations.  An example:  Gargoyles is donating 20 "gargoyle" ornaments (Thanks, Gayle!).  Do you have something small and representative of your business to contribute?  Do you have old ornamenets sitting around that you could donate?  Candy canes?  Origami folded flyers or coupons?  Think festive!

This has been an extremely popular event in the past.   We have had roving carolers, hot cider and cookies, and more to spread the cheer.

If you would like to participate/donate,

please call Teresa at 206-547-4417.

Be Prepared For Storms Sandbags Available From Seattle Public Utilities

Storm season is underway and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is offering a limited number of free, filled sandbags to households or business owners in flood-prone areas.  If you've experienced, or come close to, flooding, you may consider using sandbags.

Sandbags don't seal out water, but can help redirect the flow of water and protect property from debris.  Sandbags must be used with caution because it is illegal to divert water to your neighboring properties.

SPU is making up to 25 sandbags available to households or businesses at four locations listed below starting Friday, October 15.  Sandbags are heavy (they weigh about 40 pounds each), so be sure either you, or someone you bring with you, can lift, carry and load the sandbags into your vehicle.

Sandbag Pick-Up Locations:

South Park Neighborhood         Delridge Community Center

731 S. Sullivan                             4501 Delridge  Way SW
