Greetings VBSR Members and Friends:
May was a busy and exciting month here at VBSR. We were inspired by the example of Allison Hooper, a charming, capable, and funny lady who is VBSR's 2012 recipient of the Terry Ehrich Award for Social Responsibilty in Business. What Allison has accomplished with her own business, for the food and farm economy in Vermont, and for her community, is truly inspiring. Her comments that evening can be read here. Terry would be very proud. The 22nd Annual Spring Conference the next day exceeded our expectations in every way. We had over 350 attendees participating in a variety of important and relevant topics including developing our future business and community leaders, workplace diversity, and green marketing, to name a few. Some of the speakers, including the keynoters, were interviewed by Mark Johnson on WDEV and you can listen to the May 15 podcast here. Thank you panelists, keynoters, staff, volunteers, Board members, conference underwriters, and Champion members. You all contribute greatly to the success of VBSR and the value we bring to our members. We are always working towards our goal to be a vibrant learning community that develops and promotes innovative and transformative socially responsible business practices and you all are contributors towards that goal. Sincerely, Andrea Cohen VBSR Executive Director
P.S. The deadline for being included in the next edition of the Local First Book is June 1. Don't miss this great opportunity (see below) |

Thank You Conference Panelists and Attendees Positive feedback continues to come in about the 22nd Annual Spring Conference, It was certainly a great day for networking and learning. We want to hear constructive feedback so please fill out the online evaluation if you have not already done so. We have posted some conference photos on the VBSR facebook page and we hope that those who couldn't attend this year will join us next time. ________________________________________________________ |
2012 Terry Ehrich Awards Reception
Allison Hooper Honored as 11th Recipient
Allison Hooper: "It takes a village to raise an award winner. My business partner of 27 years Bob Reese could not be here for me to show him off because he is flogging Vermont Butter & Cheese in Nashville. But 27 years ago I got lucky. Bob teamed with me for the improbable task of infecting Americans with delicious cheese that they didn't yet know that they couldn't live without. Without his steady vigilance of the day to day operations of our business , the value added community activity couldn't have happened..... ".
See the rest of Allison's remarks and photos from this special evening.

VBSR Public Policy Summer Study Groups Forming
The VBSR Public Policy Committee will spend the summer and fall studying two key policy issues and this process will inform our advocacy at the Statehouse in the next year. We are looking for members to help us research and write new policies on the following topics: Financing a Public Health Care System Gov. Shumlin's administration is due to recommend funding options for Vermont's proposed single-payer system in January 2013. VBSR plans to assemble its own funding proposal - or specific recommendations toward a proposal - to deliver to the Vermont Legislature early in 2013. Labeling of GMO/GE Foods The Vermont Legislature is expected to consider next year a new version of a bill requiring the labeling of all food contained GMO/GE ingredients to be labeled as such in Vermont. VBSR has many businesses in the specialty food sector and this bill could change the way they do business in Vermont and across the country. VBSR is looking for members to either serve on one of the summer study committees or meet with the committee to discuss issues surrounding these topics. Meetings will occur in Chittenden and Washington counties (we can connect members who live and work farther away via telephone and video conference). If you are interested in assisting, please email Daniel Barlow. ________________________________________________________
