Dear Members and Friends: I just returned from the national BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies) Conference, and I am reminded about how lucky we are to live and work in a state where it is generally understood that what is good for our environment, and what is good for our people and communities, is also what makes for a healthy economy. VBSR is light years ahead of similar organizations in other cities and states having over 20 years of education, networking, and policy under our belts. I was honored to be on one of the conference panels that addressed public policy, and many of the audience members were still trying to appreciate why it might even be beneficial to venture into those muddy waters. I was also incredibly impressed with the momentum and ideas coming from these other groups and am reminded that Vermont and VBSR cannot rest on our laurels--there are ample opportunities to move forward in "zero waste", healthy workplaces, toxics use reduction, community diversity, public transportation, and energy efficiency. Take a few minutes to learn from our friends about innovative programs in Bellingham WA , learn about sustainable fashion, and environmental action and self reliance in minority communities. Social responsibility never ends. It is a continuous journey that we hope to continue traveling with you. Best, Andrea Cohen VBSR Executive Director

VBSR Public Policy Update
VBSR began advocating reforms to our health care system 20 years ago. We knew that to have a healthy state, a healthy population and a healthy business climate, Vermont needed a system that decoupled health insurance from employment and extended health care to all residents. Last month all that hard work came to fruition when Gov. Shumlin signed a health care reform bill into law. This new law puts Vermont on the path to a universal health care system. VBSR Bids Fond Farewell to Tara Pfeiffer-Norrell
On June 24th I will be leaving VBSR to take a new position at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, as Director of Selection and Development. I want to thank everyone in the VBSR community for a great three years. It has been a fantastic opportunity to work on not only the Vermont Intern Program, but also the Local First Coupon Book. I am honored that I was able to work with so many smart and interesting people. Though I am leaving my position here, I look forward to continuing my participation in VBSR in the years to come. Please feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn at http://www.linkedin.com/in/vtinterns. Thanks and best, Tara __________________________________________________________ |
