October Greetings! A chill is in the air, the political campaign signs are in bloom, and this means it is time for the VBSR Fall Conference! Please join us November 9th down at Mt. Snow. Whether you are interested in improving the world by sharpening your socially responsible business practices, advancing conscientious public policy, or by engaging in peer networking and support, you will find something in this conference for you.

VBSR Public Policy Update
Dan Barlow Joins VBSR as Public Policy ManagerDan Barlow, the well-known political reporter for the Vermont Press Bureau, will join Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility as Public Policy Manager. Dan was the recipient of the 2009 New England Associated Press award, and is a frequent guest on various Vermont news and analysis television and radio programs. As Public Policy Manager, Dan will be VBSR's chief liaison to state legislators to advance VBSR's policy goals through legislative lobbying and strategies, research, outreach, and education.
VBSR 2010 Legislative LeadersWe are pleased to announce that our 2010 Legislative Leader awards will be presented to Senator Vince Illuzzi for his leadership on Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund solvency legislation, and Senator Hinda Miller for her leadership on the Vermont Benefit Corporation legislation. The awards will be presented at the Nov. 9th Fall Conference. VBSR Vermont Intern Program Awarded 3rd DOL Grant
The Vermont Intern Program through VBSR has been awarded its grant application by the Vermont Department of Labor for the third year in a row! Since the first year of the program, 87 students have been placed in paid internships, over 56 businesses have partnered with the program, and 19 colleges regularly participate. The Vermont Intern Program would like to thank all of the businesses, colleges, and students who have continued to make this program a great success. VBSR's Owen Milne Named One of VBM's Rising Stars
VBSR is pleased to congratulate Owen Milne, Development Manager, for recognition by Vermont Business Magazine's Rising Stars program. In addition, we would also like to extend congrats to the 20 of the 40 Rising Stars that are employed by VBSR member companies and organizations. The inaugural program celebrates Vermont individuals that contribute to the economy and engage their community. Hickok and Boardman Receives Top Honors at United Way Hometown Hero Celebration Hickok and Boardman Financial Planning and Group Benefits was honored among the five final Hometown Hero award winners in the "Business" category for their work in many local nonprofits throughout Chittenden County. While presenting the award to Hickok and Boardman, Frank Gibney of the Gibney Family Foundation said, "(The company's) trust in their employees to use their time wisely began with the company founder and key leaders ... volunteering and making their own financial commitments to several local nonprofits, years ago. Their own passions to achieve outstanding outcomes, and the success stories that followed ... have inspired ... the employees, who have served in untold numbers of volunteer leadership positions, and supported at least 1500 hours of volunteer time, at over thirty local nonprofits, annually."
