Greetings!

New Year's Eve has always been a time for looking back on the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. Did your New Year resolutions make our top five list?
  1. Stay informed about the changes in the grantmaking community. Did you know that there are major changes for 2012 for several of the Colorado funders? You can check the Colorado Grants Guide online or click on these links for additional information. Boettcher Foundation, Adolph Coors Foundation, Gates Family Foundation, Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson Foundation, Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado.
  2. Engage board members more effectively. Engaged nonprofit board members are happy board members. Create an environment that encourages engagement and invite your board members to think about strategy, not just administrative tasks. Tips: use a consent agenda; break into small groups for brainstorming; be clear on decision points; send information out before the meeting.
  3. Spend more time with family and friends. Recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others, show that more than 50% of Americans vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year. Make plans to meet with friends for an evening of camaraderie at a favorite restaurant or take the family to a popular Colorado place for family fun. Work shouldn't always come first!
  4. Develop a strategic plan. Simply put, a strategic plan is a vision of your organization's future and the basic steps required to achieve that future. A good plan should include goals and objectives, desired outcomes, metrics for measuring your progress, timelines, and budgets.
  5. Implement that strategic plan. Strategic planning implementation is at the heart of making changes of any kind happen in your organization.

The saying "only change is constant" has been proven over and over during the past several years. Ways to surf these changes are: plan, and then commit the time to explore; get comfortable in the unknown zone, then look for the possibilities. Our top five list can help with that.

May your 2012 be filled with wonder, excitement, success, and most of all community!

Happy New Year!

Colorado Collaboration AwardColorado Collaboration Award

Congratulations to the 2011 award winner, Northwest Colorado Community Health Partnership.

Guidelines for 2012 will be made available in January. In the meantime, if you are thinking about applying here are a few questions to brainstorm about:

  1. Is your collaboration based in Colorado and serving Colorado constituents?
  2. Does your collaboration involve two or more entities (i.e. nonprofit organizations, businesses, and/or government agencies)?
  3. Is the lead organization in your collaboration a 501(c)(3)?
  4. Does your collaboration have a structure that is evidenced by a written formal agreement (i.e. memorandum of understanding (MOU), contract, or merger agreement)?
  5. Does the lead organization's nondiscrimination policy expressly include "sexual orientation" and "gender expression"?
