Thoughts from 2011 CRC Leader

I am a professional development junkie. By this, I mean that I feel there is always more to learn about doing my job and living my life in the best way possible. I founded my organization, Hazing Prevention four years ago, and that act was my first foray into the nonprofit world. I clearly had a lot to learn. For that reason, I was very excited about immersing myself into a ten month program with other nonprofit executives. I had high expectations about what this experience would offer, and the program totally exceeded them!

The management content on mission and vision, working with a board, governance and fundraising were of significant value. While I was pleasantly surprised by how much I already knew, being able to discuss each of these issues and others, with the presenters and my fellow participants was of huge benefit. The leadership pieces of the program - including a four-day retreat in the mountains - were a total surprise. I did not expect to grow as a professional, explore my personal values and leadership style, or receive such incredible coaching as part of this experience. I thought I would simply learn more about effectively running a nonprofit and call it a day.

What really surprised me, however, were the personal relationships I developed with the other amazing individuals in this program. Given that folks came from across the state and only spent a total of 13 days together over a nine-month period, I just didn't see this coming. A great deal of the value of the CRC Leadership Program is in connecting, commiserating, and collaborating with other leaders. The program is structured to maximize those connections, and get us to draw on each other's knowledge and insights whenever possible.

In terms of return on investment, this program will pay dividends for years to come for the connections it gave me to the Colorado nonprofit community and those who serve it, the knowledge and skills gained and the relationships built. Thank you to the CRC for continuing to offer this amazing program for 23 years running. It is a treasure to the nonprofit community in Colorado!
