Greetings!

Recently I had the chance of a lifetime: I was invited, along with my horse Shamhu, to participate in the demonstration portion of a leadership program entitled "Horse Sense For Leaders" or" You Can Learn a Lot from a Cowboy". The event took place at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, facilitated by John Lord with cowboy Louis Woods, both very accomplished in their professions. The audience and leaders there for their 2nd week of training were 28 Internal Revenue Service senior managers. I was nervous, mainly because Shamhu and I would be in the ring with very accomplished professional observing our relationship and providing feedback. Yikes! My nerves were immediately put to rest when I actually met John and Louis. They communicated clearly and concisely that their main purpose was teaching the 28 people from around the country about the elements of leadership by working with Shamhu and me, but their overriding goal was the safety and well-being of horse and rider.Horse

Six hours later I discovered that you CAN learn a lot from a cowboy! One gem that stood out for me (and I think many nonprofit leaders will be able to relate) was knowing when to increase the pressure and when to back off. Here's how it translated for me as an Executive Director: when I am under pressure to balance the budget, engage board members, cut programs, correct staff, or strengthen community relations (usually all on the same day!) I often feel the pressure, the deadlines, etc... that can translate to turning up the pressure on staff. Well, just as with horses, if I apply too much pressure without paying attention to their response, staff may feel trapped and "look outside the ring" for an escape. Instead of gaining the results I am seeking and accomplishing a goal together, we could spend our limited resources simply running around looking to relieve the pressure.

In this time of reduced funding, increasing demands for services, too little time, and too few staff, how can YOU take a step back and see if you and your organization need to release the pressure so you can accomplish your intended goals?

Enjoy the autumn colors, take time to reflect, and keep doing the good work - it is all important in our world and know you can learn a lot from a cowboy...and it is not always about horses!
