Greetings!

As autumn slowly begins to arrive here in Colorado it has me thinking about nonprofits, and our role in a civil society. According to Lester M. Salamon and Helmut K. Anheier the term is defined as follows: "civil society" is one in which there are three more or less distinct sectors - government, business, and nonprofit - that nevertheless find ways to work together in responding to public needs.

The term "social sector" is now used to refer to the various types of organizations that include: foundations, charity organizations, schools, universities, hospitals, museums, professional associations, and a host of other institutions not classified as belonging to either business or government.

Forward-thinking, nonprofit leaders realize that many of the vital issues they seek to address in building stronger communities in a civil society simply cannot be addressed without the active cooperation and participation of everyone.

Nonprofits have a history of cooperation and collaboration with each other. Government entities have a history of cooperation with businesses -- practically uncharted territory. However, there are benefits for nonprofits and companies that do team up.

Nonprofit organizations stand to realize: economies of scale and scope (realized from volume increases that result from alliances that extend organizations' markets, client bases, or purchased inputs); synergies (from collaborations that bring together complementary capabilities); revenue enhancement; and expert business advice.

As for corporations, collaboration with nonprofits stands to bring about important benefits in the following areas: strategy enrichment (community service becomes a part of corporate strategy); human resource management (programs like this help attract good employees); culture building (community service is an integral part of corporate culture); and last business generation (businesses can benefit from external linkages they develop through community service).

I encourage each of you to seek a strong cooperative relationship with a local business in your community, one that goes beyond a donor relationship and watch how together you can make a difference.
