Greetings!

Last week after Cheyenne Frontier Days, I was having dinner with friends, all brilliant professionals in their field, but only one was another nonprofit professional. Still the conversation turned to the nonprofit sector and how it can and should be more efficient and effective, more business-like... OK - that is where I have to disagree. Yes, all of us (private, nonprofit, and government) can improve how we manage our organizations; professional development is all about continuous improvement. However, to say that nonprofits are inefficient and ineffective...well that is just not true!

If you look at the structure of our sector, what makes us so strong is our volunteers, communities, donors and staff. This is also what can make a nonprofit appear to be inefficient. We have a responsibility to our mission, not just the bottom line. Getting input from volunteers, boards of directors, and other key stakeholders before making an important decision can sometimes be cumbersome. However, the return on investment is astounding! It often makes for better decisions and outcomes and it always creates a community vision. As a former small business owner (in a far away past life) it was easy when I wanted to add a product or change how I conducted my business (hint: the key term here is MY - nonprofits are not owned by anyone). However, nonprofits are responsible to the public and as such, must include the public in their processes.

So please, the next time someone tells you that the sector needs to be more efficient, ask them how they can see that happening, while still including members of the public and, of course, engaging our much-needed and greatly appreciated volunteers and boards.

A friend once said that running a nonprofit was the hardest thing she had ever done. She explained it in this manner: picture going to a restaurant and when your check arrives, telling the manager that you wanted $2.00 of your bill to go to pay the lights, $3.00 to pay for the food, but none of it was to be used to pay the staff, rent, or insurance. You can only imagine the laughter that ensued, but in truth, that highlights only one of many issues that make nonprofit management (and efficiency) such a challenge!

Born and raised in San Francisco, Markus Makari, Founder and Executive Director of 1st Note Music Foundation, has more than 25-years experience as a credit-and-collections analyst, manager of revenue and director of revenue recovery.

Denver-based nonprofit 1st Note provides musical instruments and education to at-risk, underprivileged, and needy youth of all ages throughout the Denver region. "We believe in the transformative power of music to inspire creativity, teach problem-solving skills and encourage good citizenship," says Marcus.

He attributes his success to his parents, both Southerners-his father is from Texas and his mother from Louisiana-who instilled their lifelong passion for music and the arts into their five children. "Learning to play an instrument teaches invaluable lessons that carry over into all areas of life," says Markus. "Music brings people together. In the south, black and white musicians learned to play together in harmony. Music smashes color and cultural barriers."

Markus has held management level positions with government agencies and major corporations. He served as Manager of Revenue for Spectra Logic and Credit Analyst for Quantum, both high-tech data-storage companies. He spent 12 years as a revenue-recovery officer in California, initially with Placer County and later with Sacramento County, home of the state capital.

After completing his MBA in International Business from Walden University later this year, Markus expects to begin his Ph.D. in Social Impact Management in February, also at Walden. He earned his bachelor's degree from Clayton University. Walden and Clayton are based in St. Louis, Missouri. Markus is currently serving as president of the Toastmasters Club in Westminster, Co.

He is also active here at Community Resource Center. Among his recreational pursuits are saxophone, golf, fencing, and bicycle riding. Markus and his wife of 10 years, has a daughter and two sons. They make their home in Westminster.

Denver Office of Economic Development Makes Training Subsidy Funds Available

With the start of a new funding cycle on July 1, 2011, the Denver Workforce Centers are seeking partners to participate in the City's Training Subsidy program. The program offers subsidies to qualified businesses and nonprofits to support new hires and training for current staff.

Funded by the federal Workforce Investment Act, the program offers a minimum of 50 percent of a new hire's wages to subsidize training for a period of up to six months. Subsidies for individual positions cannot exceed $8,000. The Denver Workforce Centers provide qualified, pre-screened workers that closely match the requirements of available positions.

To be considered for the program, a business must be located in Colorado for at least 120 days, pay into workers' compensation and unemployment insurance, and have not laid off employees within the past 90 days. Subsidies are only available for full-time positions that provide at least 32 hours of work per week.

To apply for the program, businesses must submit an interest questionnaire online at www.milehigh.com.
