Teachers weave baskets to learn tribal history
Durango Herald
IGNACIO - Not far from the weight-lifting equipment, the smell of willow reeds dominated a room in the Sun Ute Community Center.

At one table, Annie Cantsee and Shirley Denetsosie, two of the last Ute Mountain Utes who can weave traditional baskets and speak Ute, led schoolteachers in the traditional craft.
Cantsee and Denetsosie demonstrated how to split the reeds with their teeth and begin weaving them into a basket.
For the teachers, it was something new.

District Creates Pagosa Springs Middle School
Pagosa Sun
Wednesday, May 12, 2010
Rather than closing the Pagosa Springs Intermediate School as a budget-cutting measure, the Archuleta School District 50 Joint decided to merge it with the Pagosa Springs Junior High School, and with a unanimous vote at Tuesday's board meeting, renamed both schools as the Pagosa Springs Middle School.
Previously, the board had considered closing the intermediate school, one of many ideas proposed to save the district money as it attempted to address $1.35 million in cuts for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, with an additional $1 million in cuts the following year.

According to estimates released by the district last January, closing the Intermediate School would have saved around $140,000 a year.

Mancos Tribune     reprinted with permission - no link available

Art's renaissance in Mancos got a jump-start last May when "Grand Openings on Grand Avenue" brought people from all over the Four Corners to eat, browse galleries, shop at vendor stalls and listen to music in historic downtown Mancos. The renaissance continues on May 15.

If you haven't been off U.S. 160 as it goes through Mancos and savored this small town "where the West still lives," you're invited to be part of the "Spring into Mancos" art festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday.

The town of Mancos will block off the 100 block of West Grand and an adjacent block on Mesa Street, providing two blocks for you to wander with family and friends, to examine the offerings of 20 or more juried art vendors in the street.

The arts of decorating gourds, making pottery and wood-burning images will be demonstrated on the sidewalks by local artists. Artisans of Mancos is having an ice cream social from noon to 4 p.m. in the historic Bauer Bank Building. Food and drink will also be available at Raven House
