Dear Friends of CRC:
In my new role at CRC I have been very lucky to work with some incredibly talented and dedicated individuals, both paid staff and volunteers. What I noticed was that we have all four generations represented at CRC. Providing me a fabulous opportunity to learn and grow. As a baby-boomer myself, I never gave much thought about how each generation brings its own style, traits and influences to the work environment. I guess it's the forever-young in me, but our staff and volunteers have helped me look deeper into what this generational transition means to our organization, as well as me personally.
I have been in the nonprofit sector for over 20 years; at one point I was the younger generation bringing in new ideas and approaches to how we did our work. I still seek out and bring the cutting (and sometimes bleeding) edge of ideas to the organizations in which I am involved. As a leader, if I want to continue to be effective in meeting our organization's mission I must focus on the development of the future or the "now" generation. This term was introduced to me last week during the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network conference. They are the ones that are leading us into the future. Although we as baby boomers are not yet ready to quietly fade away, if we learned anything from the generation before us (traditionalist) it is that we need to prepare for this transition of power and be open to letting go of the reins.
How do we do that? All the experts say that leadership transition must have a clear destination, a clear path and clear expectations. As I mentioned in last month's letter, clear communication is the key. With the graying of the sector, a term coined by the United Way over 10 years ago, the time to begin this transfer of power is NOW- but how and what does that look like? A couple of suggestions might be:
- Shared leadership- the essential part of selfless leadership is embracing the fact that you are passing along a legacy of your best traits to the emerging leaders of tomorrow! This is a gift you give of yourself, without any strings or expectations on how it is used.
- Learning organizations- provide an environment in which we can all learn from each other; where everyone's voice is valued and listened to; where mistakes are used for learning not punishment, and where creativity and difference are rewarded.
This is just the start of generational transitions. I would encourage you and your organizations to take the time to discover the untapped talent, leadership, and ideas of everyone involved- you might just be surprised at what you discover!
Respectfully,
Carol Lynn Nickell

| Five Generational Leadership Trends Every Nonprofit Professional Should Know |
Sarah Fischler and Lauren Price, Community Resource Center. Sarah is the Director of Consulting and Special Projects at CRC and Board President of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network Denver , and Lauren is CRC's Director of Rural Outreach. They can be found on Twitter: @sarahfischler, and @laurenelizab.Late April was a busy time for Denver nonprofit professionals! Lauren and Sarah both had the opportunity to attend the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network National Leaders Conference, hosted by YNPN Denver. Sarah also attended parts of the Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP) and Council on Foundations annual conferences, while Lauren followed these conferences on Twitter and webTV. Sessions on the practical aspects of leadership development and the implications for the sector were prominently featured at all three conferences. The transfer of leadership from the Silent Generation (b. 1928 -1945) and Boomers (b. 1946-1964) to Gen Xers (b. 1965 - 1980) and Millennials (b. after 1980) is well underway. This transition has implications for the ways we communicate, strategize, fundraise and implement our programs. All relating back to the generational leadership shift, these five trends were echoed across the three conferences. Click here to read the full article. |

| Automatic Revocation of Tax-Exempt Status Effective May 15, 2010 |
2007 federal legislation required most tax exempt organizations with annual revenues under $25,000 to begin filing a brief form of the IRS 990 annual return - known as the 990N or the "e-postcard'. Previously these groups had been exempted from annual filing requirements.
The law also provided that groups failing to begin filing within three years were subject to automatic revocation of their tax exempt status. The first three-year deadline, for groups whose last fiscal year ended December 31, 2009, is May 15, 2010.
Compliance is relatively easy - the filing is done electronically and links to more information, an explanation of the requirement, the form itself, and frequently asked questions, are on the IRS website.
The information required is limited to eight items: -
-
-
Legal name and mailing address
-
Any other names the organization uses
-
Name and address of a principal officer
-
Web site address if the organization has one
-
- If applicable, a statement that the organization has terminated or is terminating (going out of business)

"Thanks again for the class (New to Nonprofits? An Overview.) You answered so many of my questions! The biggest of which was: Should Jane's Bridge be for-profit or not-for-profit? After taking your class, I've decided to keep it for-profit. I think I'll be a lot more effective as such, especially as I intend to take it nation-wide. Thanks again. You're amazing!" --Jane Arian, CEO Jane's Bridge

| Where in Colorado? |
Take a guess for a chance to win a copy of the Colorado Grants Guide. Each month, we feature a photo taken during our travels around Colorado. Last month, we featured this photograph of the giant snowman in Gunnison. Congratulations to Joan Sweere of YMCA of Metropolitan Denver. She wins a copy of the Colorado Grants Guide. Thanks for participating!
For this month's "Where in Colorado?" and in honor of Colorado Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month, we are inviting guesses on a photo from a different part of Colorado.

What is Colorado Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month? Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month is a celebration of our state's heritage. Help spread the word that preserving the past is important. Saving significant prehistoric and historic places ensures that future generations in Colorado will maintain a connection with our shared cultural legacy.
The first person to correctly identify the location of this photo by posting it on our blog will receive a copy of the Colorado Grants Guide.
