Capacity Building Services for Dealing with Tough Times

There is a high likelihood that the effects of our current economic crisis on the nonprofit sector will be broad.  What is your organization doing to prepare?  If you do not know where to start, or have identified an area of need within your organization, CRC's experienced nonprofit consultants are here to help.

Strategy Sessions - Starting at $750
If your budget is limited or you want to start small, consider a strategy session with a CRC consultant.  After reviewing your financial statements, planning documents, and programmatic information, a CRC consultant will meet with you, board members, or your staff to conduct an organizational assessment and learn about your organizations challenges and opportunities.  CRC will provide a report and additional consultation time to provide the guidance to help you in determining some ways to quickly increase your organization's effectiveness and sustainability.

Services to Help Improve Organizational Effectiveness
If you are looking to develop some specific strategies to address fundraising, organizational strategies, financial management, or overall effectiveness, CRC can develop a customized consulting program to meet the specific needs of your organization.

Collaborations, Partnerships, and Mergers
In tough times, many different types of collaborative relationships can help your organization achieve its mission more effectively.  CRC can help your organization explore and develop collaborative opportunities, from greater coordination to merging with another organization.

Want to learn more?
If you would like to learn more about the CRC's services that can help your organization weather these tough times, please contact Sarah Fischler at fischler@crcamerica.org or 303-623-1540.  There is no charge for initial consultations.

 Scholarships for Art Professionals

In order to strengthen arts organizations in Colorado, The Community Resource Center (CRC) has partnered with the Colorado Council on the Arts (CCA) to provide scholarships and travel assistance for Colorado artists and arts administrators to attend existing nonprofit and business management classes. The goal is to help artists and arts organizations achieve financial stability and build sustainable organizational capacity.

For professional development opportunities over 50 miles one way from origination, travel assistance of up to $150 is available. For those traveling over 200 miles one way, lodging reimbursement of up to $100 is also available. Scholarships are limited to only one per person and are awarded on reimbursable terms. Denver Foundation offers TA Grants

Even when the economy isn't as challenging as it is today, all nonprofit organizations need help from time to time in order to function more effectively and efficiently. This is especially true of new or emerging nonprofit organizations or those with smaller budgets. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. In fact, recognizing that the organization has a problem or challenge, or needs to improve in some area, and then identifying what kind of help the organization needs, is a sign that the organization is self-aware and proactive. These are positive traits to be proud of!

That's why The Denver Foundation has set aside funds specifically to provide grants for nonprofit organizations to get this kind of help, usually called "technical assistance." Technical Assistance (TA) can be many things, but what is most important is that TA helps the staff and/or board members of the organization learn something new and increase their capacity to lead, manage, and direct the organization.

Examples of TA could include: attending a workshop or training session on a specific topic, such as marketing, volunteer management, financial management, or fundraising; hiring a facilitator for a board retreat; or working with a consultant to develop a fundraising plan or a strategic plan for the organization.  What all of these have in common is that the staff and/or board members of the organization will be actively involved in the TA process and will learn new skills or information that will help the organization change and improve.

The Denver Foundation has recently launched a new blog on technical assistance. You can find a descriptions and reflections from recent technical assistance grantees, searchable by area of concern. I encourage you to contact these organizations for information. The TA Blog is a place where you can interact with other organizations, share stories, questions and experiences-all for the purpose of building organizational capacity.

We hope you will like this new tool and that it will enable you to learn from your peer organizations. As always, we are available if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact Christiano Sosa at csosa@denverfoundation.org or 303.300.1790, ext. 159
