Call to Artists
| | Request for Qualifications (Design Team Artist)
Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CONRAC) at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
Design Team Artist Fee: $140,000
Artwork Fabrication/Installation Budget: $1,260,000
Deadline: Monday, May 21, 2012, 5:00 pm (CST)
The City of Austin Art in Public Places (AIPP) program seeks to commission an experienced public artist to participate as part of the design team for the Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CONRAC) Art in Public Places project at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The selected artist will collaborate with the design team to create integrated artwork for the new facility and add an artistic perspective to the overall design.
Eligibility. Professional visual artists at least 18 years of age permanently residing and legally qualified to work in the United States, and not under contract with the AIPP program at the time of application, are eligible to apply. Apply via ASAPP!, the AIPP program's online application system.

Public Art Bike Tour
| | Public Art Bike Tour and Salon Saturday, May 19, 10:00am - noon
In partnership with Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop, and in celebration of Austin Bike Month, we will hold a public art bike tour through downtown Austin on Saturday, May 19th from 10:00am - noon.
The tour will begin at Mellow Johnny's and end at Open Room Austin, an AIPP artwork at Sand Beach Park near the Pfluger Bridge. Upon reaching Open Room Austin, participants can chat about art with artists who have bike-related commissions through AIPP. Participants can choose to do both the tour & salon, take the bike tour only, or just meet at Sand Beach Park for the salon (about 11 a.m.).
Tour begins at 400 Nueces (Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop)
Tour ends at Open Room Austin, northwest of the corner of West Cesar Chavez & Sandra Muraida Way
- Participants will need to provide their own bike and helmet.
- Rentals are available at Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop.

Other Opportunities and Events | | W.E.S.T. Kick-off at The People's Gallery
6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2012 The City of Austin Cultural Arts Division will host a reception and open house to highlight the work of artists included in the 2012 People's Gallery exhibition. Visitors may tour the exhibition and speak with artists about their work.
At 6:30 p.m., featured artists will give short presentations about their work in Council Chambers: Rino Pizzi & Sally Weber, Melissa Borrell, Sunyong Chung, Werllayne Nunes, Heather Carter, and Shawn Smith.
The reception will serve to kick-off the 1st annual West Austin Studio Tour (W.E.S.T.), presented by Big Medium. W.E.S.T. is a free, self-guided tour of local artists' studios and exhibition spaces, May 19-20, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. www.westaustinstudiotour.com
The People's Gallery exhibition is open to the public during regular business hours, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Make your mark on the Asian American Resource Center!
AIPP Artists Sunyong Chung and Philippe Klinefelter invite the citizens of Austin to submit stones for inclusion in a 12 foot diameter mosaic (pictured) for the new Asian American Resource Center.
The artists hope to receive a stone from each nation making up Asia, so the entirety of Asia will be represented within the artwork. For donation guidelines, click here!

2012 Americans for the Arts Annual Convention
Public Art Network Preconference
The annual convention for the Americans for the Arts (AFTA) will be held in Texas next month! The Public Art Network (PAN) Preconference will be one of the lead-in events.
Where: San Antonio, TX When: The PAN Preconference will be June 7 + 8. The AFTA Convention will be held June 8-10.
* The Public Art Network Preconference will be held at the Pearl Brewery on Thursday, June 7, and then at the convention headquarters hotel, the Grand Hyatt San Antonio on Friday, June 8.
Scholarship Recipients
City of Austin Cultural Arts Division (CAD) offered a number of competitive scholarships to help Austin area arts professionals to attend this year's AFTA Convention and various preconferences through it's Take it to the Next Level Program.
Thirteen scholarships in total were awarded, including two scholarships to the PAN Preconference (Jaime Castillo of Bout What I Sees and artist Barna Kantor). In addition, Jennifer Chenoweth of Fisterra Studio received a scholarship to attend the convention directly from the Americans for the Arts (AFTA). Congratulations to all and we hope that you enjoy the convention!
