POTENTIAL FOR "CHAOS" IN CONGRESS?

Republican and Democratic congressional leaders are stepping up their war of words over a looming lame-duck session that is already being described as "chaos in Congress," as they gird for a marathon debate tackling everything from the debt ceiling to hundreds of billions of dollars in scheduled tax hikes. At the center of the debate is the scheduled expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts. This, combined with other changes like the expiration of the payroll tax cut backed by Obama, will add up to a roughly $310 billion tax hike, according to a letter penned by Senate Republicans this past week. "This would be, without any exaggeration, the largest tax increase in American history," they wrote.

The tax provisions, though, are just part of the mix. The country could bump up against the debt ceiling by early next year, leading House Speaker John Boehner this past week to once again demand spending cuts in exchange for a vote to increase that cap. In addition, spending cuts to the military and other areas triggered by last year's debt-ceiling deal are scheduled to kick in at the beginning of 2013.

With so much clumped on Congress' plate at the end of the year, leaders in both parties are calling on one another to begin dealing with the issues now -- as in, before the November election.

They're also moving to insulate themselves politically, by claiming to take the initiative on problems that months from now could end in stalemate.

House Speaker John Boehner and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi traded barbs on the issue Sunday.

Pelosi, on ABC's "This Week," accused Boehner of going "over the edge." She said threatening to hold up the debt-ceiling increase "is not a responsible, mature, sensible place for us to go."

Boehner said he's "not going to apologize for leading." He called on Congress to deal with all three of the looming debates -- tax hikes, defense cuts and the debt ceiling -- before the election. (Contributors: Capitol Hill Prayer Partners, Fox News)
Our God is not a God of chaos or confusion, but of peace and order in all things. This is the peace that passes all understanding, and this is the peace our Father desires all of us to walk in now and forevermore. Pray that the Congressional members will seek God's wisdom in their deliberations.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
(John 14:27)

COME TO PRAY IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL
AMERICA'S CHALLENGES TOO SERIOUS TO IGNORE

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor Thursday regarding the need for Senate Democrats to stop ducking responsibility on the serious and urgent problems facing the United States:

"Yesterday in the Senate, we got a vivid look at why the challenges we face in this country are so difficult to address: 1) "With a looming fiscal crisis some have called the most predictable in history. 2) "With a national debt at a level none of us ever imagined. 3) "With millions unemployed and millions more underemployed. 4) "With the biggest tax hike in history looming at the end of the year. 5) "And with entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security drawing closer every day to insolvency.

"Here's what Senate Democrats did yesterday: they ducked. They were presented with five different options for dealing with these problems, and they voted against every single one. "Now, no one was particularly surprised to see Democrats reject the Republicans proposals. We hoped that some of them would support them, but we weren't altogether surprised they didn't. But every American should be surprised that Democrats didn't offer a single plan of their own, and that they didn't even support the plan offered by a president of their own party. But, sadly, that's what passes for leadership in the Senate these days: oppose everybody else -including a President of your own party and hope nobody notices you're not doing anything yourself.

Most people would say it's the responsibility of the party in power to propose solutions. And they'd be right. "The problems we face are simply too serious and too urgent to avoid any longer. And yet Democrats continue to duck any responsibility for addressing them. We saw that yesterday. "I would imagine there are some Democrats this morning who are having second thoughts about their party's performance yesterday. And if I'm right about that, I invite them to stand up and work with us. "Put aside what's politically safe, and do what's right. The problems we face are too great to put off another day. It's time to come together and act." (Contributor:
Capitol Hill Prayer Partners, Christian Coalition of America)

Pray that the majority party in the Senate will stand up to its responsibility to offer solid solutions to the nation's economic ills. Pray that there will be a joining of righteous hearts to forge a working alliance to get this job done. Continue to cry out before our Lord for mercy in this hour of national emergency; pray that the Lord would move upon the hearts of our leaders to pursue His righteous ways.

"He who has a slack hand becomes poor, But the hand of the diligent makes rich."(Proverbs 10:4)

TAXPAYERS ARE STILL PAYING FOR ABORTIONS

Congressmen Bill Huizenga and Dan Boren introduced H.R. 5646, the Homeland Security Respect for Life Act, which closes loopholes that allow taxpayer funds to be used for abortions for illegal immigrants in detention by the Department of Homeland Security. The bill mirrors language that is currently included in the annual Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortions for federal detainees, but not those under DHS jurisdiction.

On Thursday, May 17, Members of Congress at a hearing in the U.S. House were told about how the nation's capital allows abortions all the way until birth. They were informed that one abortion facility in the District of Columbia openly advertises abortions at seven months into pregnancy, paid for via cash or credit card.

No more than five nations in the world have a legal policy that is this extreme, three doctors told members of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution. They supported the District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 3803), that would protect unborn children in the District after they have reached 20 weeks fetal age. (Contributors: Govtrack 5646, Religious Freedom Coalition, LifeNews, Govtrack 3803)

Ask the Lord to bring changes to the policies in our nation that would allow abortions at any point within the pregnancy! Ask the Lord for His help for those who have the power to change these abominations. Ask for forgiveness for using federal dollars for abortion.

"And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech."(2 Kings 23:10)

SPACEX: DELIVERS TO INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

SpaceX sent its Falcon 9 rocket and unmanned capsule soaring off a Cape Canaveral launch pad early Tuesday, heading for an historic rendezvous with the International Space Station.

The rocket lifted off into dark skies above the Space Coast at 3:44 a.m.

Some 11 minutes after launch, the solar arrays deployed on the spacecraft, prompting cheers and high-fives among SpaceX employees in the Hawthorne, California mission control center. The solar array deployment had been considered the first big post-launch test.

"Falcon flew perfectly!" SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted.

Tuesday's liftoff came on the second attempt to launch SpaceX's demonstration mission for NASA. If all goes well during the series of maneuvers and tests SpaceX will put the spacecraft through, the cargo vehicle on Friday could become the first non-government ship to berth at the space station.

After years of testing, NASA is hoping to turn the job of carrying cargo and crews over to private industry at a lower cost. Meanwhile, the agency will focus on deep-space missions to land probes on asteroids and Mars.

Several dozen spectators gathered to watch the nighttime launch.

If SpaceX successfully docks at the space station, it would prove the company's readiness to start delivering cargo under a $1.6 billion contract. The other company with a NASA cargo contract is Orbital Sciences Corp., which is set to test launch its rocket this summer.

SpaceX had initially planned to launch the Falcon 9 early Saturday, but trouble with one of the rocket's nine Merlin engines forced a last-second abort. A valve on the engine was replaced, and the rocket was cleared to go.

FACEBOOK AND THE MARRIAGE CONNECTION

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg changed his status to "married" Saturday and received over one million "likes" from his followers. But the site he founded isn't always so marriage-friendly. In fact, lawyers say the social network contributes to an increasing number of marriage breakups.

More than a third of divorce filings last year contained the word Facebook, according to a U.K. survey by Divorce Online, a legal services firm. And over 80% of U.S. divorce attorneys say they've seen a rise in the number of cases using social networking, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. "I see Facebook issues breaking up marriages all the time," says Gary Traystman, a divorce attorney in New London, Conn. Of the 15 cases he handles per year where computer history, texts and emails are admitted as evidence, 60% exclusively involve Facebook.

"Affairs happen with a lightning speed on Facebook," says K. Jason Krafsky, who authored the book "Facebook and Your Marriage" with his wife Kelli. In the real world, he says, office romances and out-of-town trysts can take months or even years to develop. "On Facebook," he says, "they happen in just a few clicks." The social network is different from most social networks or dating sites in that it both re-connects old flames and allows people to "friend" someone they may only met once in passing. "It puts temptation in the path of people who would never in a million years risk having an affair," he says. Facebook declined to comment.

Even when extra-marital affairs develop with no help from Facebook, experts say the site provides a deceptively comfortable forum for people to let off steam about their lives and inadvertently arouse the suspicions of spouses. "The difference with Facebook is it feels safe, innocent and private," says Randy Kessler, an Atlanta, Ga.-based lawyer and current chair of the family law section of the American Bar Association. (See Facebook and Divorce Discussed in WSJ.) "People put an enormous amount of incriminating stuff out there voluntarily." It could be something as innocuous as a check-in at a restaurant, he says, or a photograph posted online.

When couples do end up in divorce court, lawyers say Facebook posts are used to determine alimony and child custody. Last year, a superior district court judge in Connecticut ordered a divorcing couple to hand over the passwords of their respective Facebook to the other's lawyers. Kessler says it's an extremely useful vehicle to gather evidence. "It helps me cross-examine a witness," he says. Any pattern of behavior that's recorded on Facebook relating to parenting skills, excessive partying or even disparaging remarks about a spouse that violates a court order could be admissible in court. Of course, it's not Facebook's fault it's being dragged through divorce court, he says, "It's the people who use it." Pray that the marriages in the United States would be strengthened by God's omnipotent hand. Pray that the followers of Christ would put Him first in their oeder of marital priority, by following His teachings on loving one another. Pray for a growing covenantal understanding of marriage rather than a contractual agreement.

FOR THE COST OF A MEAL

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. 'I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,' I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.

"Where are you headed?" I asked the soldier seated nearest to me.

"Petawawa. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan."

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars... It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time...

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. "No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch.

Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks. I'll wait till we get to base."

His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. "Take a lunch to all those soldiers." She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me.

"My son was a soldier in Iraq; it's almost like you are doing it for him." Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, "Which do you like best - beef or chicken?"

"Chicken," I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class.

"This is your thanks."

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room.

A man stopped me. "I saw what you did. I want to be part of it... Here, take this." He handed me twenty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand and said, "I want to shake your hand." Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain's hand.

With a booming voice he said, 'I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later, I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane... Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. "It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You."

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers.

As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little...

[The story above has not been verified as a real event, but it has wonderful merit in that it is inspirational, and can certainly be used as a model to inspire blessings upon others. We felt  that this story is worthy of sharing.]

Pray that we as Americans find creative ways to honor those who put their lives on the line for our national defense and freedoms. Pray for our police and firemen and women who selflessly throw themselves in the line of danger to protect us each day. Give thanks to the Lord for their faithfulness in serving America's freedom.

GLOBAL DAY OF PRAYER MAY 27, 2012
                                     Praying with one Voice

"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together In one place"
Acts 2:1

The single thing that we request every observance to do is to pray the prayer called, "A Prayer For The World" (PFTW), during the event / gathering, no matter how large or small.

This is your opportunity to unify in prayer with Christians from across the globe.

"They lifted their voices to God with one accord..."
Acts 4:24

PRAY WITH YOUR CHURCH, GATHER IN HOMES
OR ASSEMBLE IN PUBLIC PLACES

United by a Prayer for the World, Christians from all over the world, from different cultures and denominations, from many diverse streams will gather in their homes, or where appropriate, assemble in stadiums, public auditoriums and open squares and many will devote portions of their Sunday morning Service to united prayer.

Some meetings will be small. Others will be large, but each one will be praying with the same vision of repentance and hope. As at the first Pentecost, we'll worship God openly in Christ's name and pray for the healing and blessing of the nations. As much as possible, we are seeking to gather in places beyond the walls of our church buildings.

On this day we are all praying with the world as we pray for the world.

CONGRESSIONAL PRAYER CAUCUS - ISSUES FOR PRAYER

Rep. Walberg Introduces Legislation Supporting School Board Prayer; 33 Members Join as Original Cosponsors - Rep. Tim Walberg, a Member of the Prayer Caucus, introduced legislation this week supporting the right of school boards to open meetings with prayer. H.Res.662 expresses the sense of the House that school boards are deliberative bodies similar to city and county councils and state and federal legislatures, and should be treated as such for purposes of analyzing the constitutionality of their prayer policies.  In 1983, the Supreme Court in Marsh v. Chambers affirmed the freedom of deliberative bodies to open sessions with voluntary prayer.  Despite the fact that school boards share the characteristics of other deliberative bodies, courts have treated them in differing ways-with some courts analyzing school board prayer as "school prayer," a more stringent test, and some courts analyzing school board prayer as "deliberative body prayer."  Unless and until the Supreme Court clarifies the issue, Rep. Walberg's resolution gives Members of Congress an opportunity to support the freedom of school boards to open meetings with voluntary prayer, consistent with the Supreme Court's decision in Marsh.  Members of the Prayer Caucus will continue working to preserve the freedom of deliberative bodies across the nation to engage in the important tradition of opening sessions with prayer.

Federal Court Strikes Down NY Town's Prayer Policy; Offers Little Guidance to Other Towns - A federal appeals court this week
ruled that a New York town's policy of opening board meetings with prayer violated the Establishment Clause of the Constitution.  The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit struck down the Greece town board's prayer policy, using a complex standard that must be satisfied for a prayer policy to pass muster.  The court said that a reasonable observer, when looking at the prayer policy overall-including the process of selecting individuals to pray, the content of the prayers, and the broader behavior of everyone involved-must not think the town is associating itself with one specific religion.  Although the prayers must be diverse in religious doctrine, the court added that efforts by the town to mandate neutrality in the prayers potentially could violate the Constitution.  In addition, as one account explained, "The court said that because the town of Greece contains predominantly Christian clergy, it should search other towns and jurisdictions for non-Christians to invite to pray at its own town meetings and take other uncommon steps to ensure that non-Christians do not 'feel like outsiders.'"

Although the
court "upheld the right of towns to have such prayers before public meetings," it provided little guidance for municipalities within its jurisdiction who wish to continue our nation's rich legacy of legislative prayer.  In addition, the court concluded by effectively saying that it could not articulate a prayer policy that would be held constitutional: ". . . we do not aim to specify what the Establishment Clause allows, but restrict ourselves to noting the ways in which this town must be read to have conveyed a religious affiliation.  It is true that contextual inquiries like this one can give only limited guidance to municipalities that wish to maintain a legislative prayer practice and still comply with the mandates of the Establishment Clause."  Alliance Defense Fund, the nonprofit religious liberty law firm representing the town of Greece, will appeal the panel's decision.

Religious university drops student health plan rather than comply with HHS mandate. Franciscan University will discontinue its student health plan, rather than complying with the HHS mandate that will force scores of religious employers to provide health plans that cover abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and contraceptives-services that directly violate their religious beliefs.  According to one account, "Recent events such as these should lead those who care about religious freedom to ponder more deeply the ways that religious freedom goes hand in hand with the condition of freedom more generally. . . .  Religious freedom is rightly called our 'first freedom,' but a society that abandons its moral and political commitment to freedom in general will become less willing and indeed even hostile to protecting religious freedom in particular instances."

Senate bill would add FDR's D-Day prayer to WWII memorial; House passed companion bill earlier this year. Sen. Rob Portman introduced a bill that would direct the Secretary of the Interior to add President Franklin D. Roosevelt's D-Day prayer to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.  President Roosevelt delivered the prayer to the nation on June 6, 1944, the day that American troops stormed the beaches of Normandy.  The House of Representatives passed a companion bill
(H.R. 2070), introduced by Prayer Caucus Member Rep. Bill Johnson, earlier this year. Sen. Portman's press release is available here: http://ow.ly/b0F09. (Contributor: U.S. Congressional Prayer Caucus website)
