SILENCE ON CHINA TAKEOVER OF SOME U.S. BANKS

U.S. legislators have been unusually silent about federal regulators' decision to allow a Chinese bank to take over 13 bank branches in New York and California, suggesting that they think American banks have much to gain.

It will buy up to 80 percent of the U.S. unit of the Hong Kong-based Bank of East Asia, which operates 13 branches in New York and California.

According to the Fed the bank has total assets of roughly $2.5 trillion.

A Federal Reserve decision to let Chinese banks acquire U.S. lenders is finally being challenged by Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., who said it could open the way for Chinese government-run institutions to undercut U.S. banks.

"I worry that these banks and their U.S. subsidiaries will use their state support as a way to under price U.S. banks," Casey, chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, said in a letter Thursday to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke.

Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) won approval from the Fed on Wednesday to buy a U.S. lender in the biggest opening of the American banking market to Chinese companies. The Fed allowed ICBC to operate as a bank holding company, buying a controlling stake in Bank of East Asia's U.S. unit. The Fed also let Bank of China and Agricultural Bank of China open U.S. branches.

The decision marks the first time that regulators have allowed a Chinese bank to buy a majority stake in a U.S. depository institution. ICBC Chairman Jiang Jianqing has spent more than $6 billion on acquisitions in regions spanning Asia to South Africa and the Americas over the past three years, seeking to triple the share of profit coming from abroad to 10 percent.

"China has a long and well-documented record of undercutting U.S. companies and workers," Casey said in a statement. Its "history of flouting international trade rules requires that any involvement in the U.S. banking system needs close scrutiny."

Members of both parties usually relish the chance to bash China on everything from government subsidies to the yuan's exchange rate. Yet Wednesday's decision by the Federal Reserve to certify a Chinese bank acquisition for the first time was met by near-universal silence. COME TO PRAY IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL
LEGISLATORS: PROBE SECURITY LEAK

Congressional lawmakers called Sunday for a criminal investigation over the leak revealing that the so-called "underwear bomber" who boarded a U.S.-bound jet last month was actually a Saudi Arabian intelligence agent who had volunteered for the mission, warning that the leak could seriously damage American credibility.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Federal investigators have launched a probe into leaks related to the bomb plot by al Qaeda's Yemeni branch that was foiled by the CIA and Arab security services.

After the Associated Press reported the story last week, American and foreign officials admitted that the agent had infiltrated al Qaeda in Yemen and had posed as a suicide bomber before handing the bomb and other inside intelligence over to the Central Intelligence Agency and Saudi intelligence.

While applauding the mission's success, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, and Rep. Peter T. King, New York Republican, expressed outrage that details of the operation were made public even before top lawmakers knew, saying the leak could discourage foreign intelligence agencies from working with the U.S. on crucial anti-terrorism efforts.

"The leak really did endanger sources and methods, and the leak, I think, has to be prosecuted," Mrs. Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said on "Fox News Sunday."

And Mr. King, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said he's troubled that the AP obtained the story even though fewer people knew about the mission than when Osama bin Laden was killed one year ago.

"It put people's lives at risk, and it also sends a signal to countries willing to work with us that we can't keep a secret," he told CNN's Candy Crowley. "It really is criminal to leak out this kind of classified, sensitive information."

The FBI is currently analyzing the bomb to determine whether it would have gone undetected at an airport, but Sen. Joe Lieberman, Connecticut independent, said he thinks existing protocols would have uncovered the bomb.

"The odds are pretty good our systems would have detected this device before the individual carrying it would have got on the plane," he told CNN. ." Contributors: Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Fox News, Washington Times)

Give thanks to the Lord for exposing a very dangerous ploy of terrorism. Pray that the governmental organizations that watch over national security concerns such as this latest bomb threat be given wisdom and protection, especially the agents in the field that risk their lives to protect our citizens and national assets.

NORTH DAKOTA OIL BOOM - BLESSING OR CURSE
Photo: Jordan Malter

Kalil, who chairs the Williams County Board of Commissioners in northwest North Dakota, about 60 miles south of the Canadian border, is a third-generation farmer. The land where he now grows peas, lentils and grains -- including barley used by Anheuser-Busch, one of his largest customers -- was homesteaded in 1906 by his grandfather who, like many of the area's settlers, emigrated to rural North Dakota from Lebanon. Kalil considers the land "sacred ground," part of the old farmer ethos that regards land as so revered that it shouldn't even be used as collateral for a loan.

Then, two years ago, a crew of 14 people literally set up camp on Kalil's farmland and began drilling an oil well that remains here to this day. It's one of two wells on his land -- another will be built this summer -- and they could continue to pump for upwards of 30 years. As Kalil surveys his 8,000 acres, parts of which are littered with the unassembled pieces of an oil pipeline, he laments what's happened to it. "It's like my worst nightmare come true," Kalil says. "We've been invaded."

The oil fields need more workers than the thinly populated state of North Dakota can possibly supply. Scores of people arrive every day looking for a new start, a second chance in lives wrecked by personal troubles and the recession.

A major impact of the industry is the damage to the county road system, a grid that in many places comprises little more than two-lane gravel and dirt roads. Initially designed for farm-to-market travel, they weren't built for the big trucks that use them to access rigs and wells. Drilling each new well requires more than 2,000 truck trips, and the heavy rigs are destroying the roadways. "Simply put, the roads are falling apart in many cases," says Alan Dybing, a researcher at the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute, which estimates that fixing the roads will require an investment of more than $900 million over the next 20 years. The situation reached a boiling point earlier this year when Williams County closed the entire county and township road system to oil trucks. Local leaders insisted the move was necessary since the roads had deteriorated to the point that they were unsafe, although some critics have suggested it was also intended to send a message to the industry.

"A new guy can come out here and fall off a turnip truck and make $50,000, $60,000 easy as long as he can pass a [urine test] and tie his boots up," said Don Beaty, an oil worker from Alaska.

But not everyone is lucky, and the oil rush has brought chaos and big city troubles, like bar fights, prostitution and violent crime, to once placid small towns.

It's 9am by the time Ben Hitchcock finishes his 18-hour workday, overseeing the blend of sand, water, and chemicals used by a major oil company to blast oil out of the rock. He's due back on again at 5pm, just enough time to bolt a free buffet breakfast and catch up on some sleep in his small cubicle at the "man camp", the housing laid on by the oil company. Pray for the local and state officials in North Dakota to have Godly wisdom in setting up responsible guidelines in the newly developing oil fields. Ask the Lord to give these leaders His wisdom in establishing a way to provide help to those who are in financially stressful situations, as well as to those who are native to the area and desire to continue in their life ambitions with minimal disruption.

DRAWING REVEALS IRANIAN SECRET NUCLEAR WORK

A U.S. security institute says commercial satellite imagery shows new activity at an Iranian military site which raises concern that the country may be "washing" a building the United Nations' nuclear agency wants to inspect.

"The new activity seen in the satellite image occurred outside a building suspected to contain an explosive chamber used to carry out nuclear weapons related experiments," it said on its website in a May 8 report including the satellite image.

The Associated Press reported that a drawing based on information from inside an Iranian military site shows an explosives containment chamber of the type needed for nuclear arms-related tests that U.N. inspectors suspect Tehran has conducted there. Iran denies such testing and has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of such a chamber.

The computer-generated drawing was provided to The Associated Press by an official of a country tracking Iran's nuclear program who said it proves the structure exists, despite Tehran's refusal to acknowledge it.

That official said the image is based on information from a person who had seen the chamber at the Parchin military site, adding that going into detail would endanger the life of that informant. The official comes from an IAEA member country that is severely critical of Iran's assertions that its nuclear activities are peaceful and asserts they are a springboard for making atomic arms.

A former senior IAEA official said he believes the drawing is accurate. Olli Heinonen, until last year the U.N. nuclear agency's deputy director general in charge of the Iran file, said it was "very similar" to a photo he recently saw that he believes to be the pressure chamber the IAEA suspects is at Parchin.

He said even the colors of the computer-generated drawing matched that of the photo he had but declined to go into the origins of the photo to protect his source.

WORLD PRAYER ASSEMBLY
May 14 - 18 Jakarta, Indonesia

logo_wpa_small

Let the "New Wave" of His Glory Fill the Earth!

We acknowledge that God is at work in powerful ways all over the world. As a result we anticipate the following:

1. The World Prayer Assembly 2012 will be a "new wave" to strategically connect and empower the global prayer and mission movements. 5000-6000 Christian leaders from up to 220 nations will join with the Lord and each other through united prayer, leading to Spirit-inspired action to transform our world.

2. The World Prayer Assembly is being arranged and co-hosted by leaders of the Indonesian and Korean prayer movements, two of the most powerful prayer forces in the world, with the support of international prayer networks such as the International Prayer Council and the Global Day of Prayer.

3. The ultimate goal of the World Prayer Assembly is two-fold: to see the knowledge of the glory of the Lord filling the earth as the waters cover the sea (Habakkuk 2:14) and to experience the fulfillment of Jesus' prayer that His followers become one so the world will know He is its Creator and Savior
(John 17:21).

SYRIAN CHRISTIANS AFRAID OF POSSIBLE ISLAMIC RULE
Photo: Associated Press

Christians living in conflict-ridden Syria are afraid that their community would fall victim to religious extremism if President Bashar al-Assad regime collapses and Islamists come to power.

"I am afraid that we will suffer bad times," a member of Damascus's Christian community, who identified himself as Jorge.

A full-fledged civil war will break out in Syria if Assad's enemies and their western supporters continue efforts to topple the president, he continued.

"If the regime falls..., Islamists will come to power," Jorge said, adding that Islamists "wrongly believe that we support the current regime," and for that reason they will complicate the life of Christians.

"Sunni Muslims who predominate Syria think that if President Assad's regime representing the interests of the Alawi minority falls, they will live better. But I personally think that they are wrong. Syria is a secular state and its people, including Moslems, will not like it if the new power starts thrusting orthodox Islamic norms of moral and behavior on them," he added.

According to Jorge's opinion, extremist forces rather than liberals would come to power in Syria.

Another Syrian, an engineer from Homs, said on conditions of anonymity that he is sure that if Assad's regime falls, Christians will be "expelled from the country in one day."

Presently, the situation in Homs is quite complicated, almost all of the local Christians have moved away. Their homes have been occupied by militants and their families, and the shops have been looted. Refugees are temporarily living in other regions of the country.

Jorge said Islamists are trying to show that if the regime changes, Christians would not come under attack. "They do it to appease them [the Christians], attract them thus losing their support of the regime," he said.

Moslem leaders put messages on social networks saying that Christians and Moslems have for centuries lived together in Syria; they also try to distance themselves from the damage that has been inflicted on Christian homes and churches in Homs.

The engineer from Homs said that government forces could have "pushed out" Islamist militants from Homs if they continued shelling the city for at least three more days. "But then they adopted [UN and League of Arab States Ambassador] Kofi Annan's plan and gunfire was terminated. But this does not bring anything good to us. Our homes remain occupied by militants."

He said the majority Christians do not consider emigration a possibility. "This is our homeland. Christians have been living in Syria long before the Moslems. Why should we move away?"

Christians make up about ten percent of Syria's 23-million population. Approximately half of Syria's Christians belong to the Antiochian Orthodox Church. (Contributor: Rianovosti News, Wikipedia)

Pray for the Christians in Syria who find themselves trapped in a very unstable position with the government. Pray for their safety and strength. Pray for their needed provisions such as food and health. Pray for wisdom in their decisions as family members and as church leaders.

"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin." (Matthew 6:28)

GLOBAL DAY OF PRAYER MAY 27, 2012
                                     Praying with one Voice

"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together In one place"
Acts 2:1

The single thing that we request every observance to do is to pray the prayer called, "A Prayer For The World" (PFTW), during the event / gathering, no matter how large or small.

This is your opportunity to unify in prayer with Christians from across the globe.

"They lifted their voices to God with one accord..."
Acts 4:24

PRAY WITH YOUR CHURCH, GATHER IN HOMES
OR ASSEMBLE IN PUBLIC PLACES

United by a Prayer for the World, Christians from all over the world, from different cultures and denominations, from many diverse streams will gather in their homes, or where appropriate, assemble in stadiums, public auditoriums and open squares and many will devote portions of their Sunday morning Service to united prayer.

Some meetings will be small. Others will be large, but each one will be praying with the same vision of repentance and hope. As at the first Pentecost, we'll worship God openly in Christ's name and pray for the healing and blessing of the nations. As much as possible, we are seeking to gather in places beyond the walls of our church buildings.

On this day we are all praying with the world as we pray for the world.

COMMENTARY: MARRIAGE AND POLITICAL EXPEDIENCE

 By Cal Thomas

Former NPR and current Fox News political analyst Juan Williams made an excellent point Monday night on The O'Reilly Factor. Williams said the major reason President Obama had not endorsed same-sex marriage is because of the strong opposition to it in the black and Hispanic communities.

Who could have doubted, though, that the president favors expanding the definition of marriage to include gays and lesbians?

Vice President Joe Biden brought this divisive social issue to the forefront of the presidential campaign with his comments Sunday on Meet the Press. Biden said he is "absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying one another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties."

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney tried to have it both ways when he claimed the president's position on same-sex marriage is still "evolving." Whole species have come and gone faster than the president's "evolution" on this issue.

Carney said the president "opposes efforts in states to repeal rights or deny rights to LGBT citizens that have already been established." This means the president opposes North Carolina's new constitutional amendment that defines marriage as the legal union of a man and woman and bans same-sex marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships.

We are supposed to believe the president opposes "discrimination" against same-sex couples who wish to marry, but still favors traditional marriage, as he claimed back in 2008 when he said he believed "marriage is between a man and a woman." At least, of course, until Wednesday, when he sat down for a hastily arranged interview with ABC's Robin Roberts and said he thinks "same-sex couples should be able to marry." It appears he's calculated that whatever votes might be lost by coming out for same-sex marriage will be gained by the activism of gay rights advocates and their political contributions.

Traditional marriage is an issue most conservative Christians embrace, but even with the North Carolina result and similar laws in other states, this is a battle they are unlikely to win for a number of reasons. One is the behavior of so many in the traditionalist camp. If you are Christian and are going to argue in favor of traditional marriage, it doesn't help that so many in your camp are poor examples of what marriage is supposed to be-a lifetime union, steadfast and binding through good times and bad, sickness and health.

A 2004 study by the Barna Group, of Ventura, Calif., a polling firm that focuses mainly on Christian beliefs and practices and their cultural influence, found "the likelihood of married adults getting divorced is identical among born-again Christians and those who are not born again." In other words, the country is supposed to act as these people say, but not as large numbers of them do. Barna followed up in 2008 with a similar study that found that the 2004 numbers were not a fluke. Thirty-two percent of born-again Christians were found to be divorced, a percentage "statistically identical to that of non-born again adults."

Another reason the battle for traditional marriage is likely to be lost by traditionalists is the problem moralists have always had-the difficulty of imposing their beliefs and values on others who do not share their point of view. The fight over same-sex marriage has now become a political power game and the moral principles set down on stone tablets and given to us in the Bible have been disregarded.

If conservative Christians don't accept the opinions and practices of those who favor same-sex marriage, why should gays accept theirs? The fight centers on who can muster the most votes, not whether something is objectively true and, more importantly, who gets to make the rules.

Vice President Biden's Roman Catholic Church staunchly opposes same-sex marriage. If Biden is "comfortable" with it, he must be uncomfortable with a central doctrine of his own religion. Doesn't that elevate political pragmatism over the will of God, at least as expressed by the Catholic hierarchy?

In ancient and rebellious Israel, when there was no wide acceptance of the laws and precepts God had laid down for His people, the writer of the book known as Judges uses a phrase that could easily apply to our day and our loss of moral direction: "In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes." (Judges 21:25.)

How do you impose a biblical and traditionalist worldview about marriage when so many people have become their own "god"? 2012 Tribune Media Services Inc. (Source: World Magazine, Watch.org)

Pray for the marriages in the U.S. Pray that the Christian witness to the world will be strengthened through humility and God's grace. Pray for the institution of marriage in the Church; that God will favor our nation with His Holy Spirit to convict Americans of His righteousness regarding this holy institution.

"And He answered and said to them, 'Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning "made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.'" (Matthew 19:4-6)

"But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. 'For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence,' Says the LORD of hosts. 'Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.'" (Malachi 2:15-16)

CONGRESSIONAL PRAYER CAUCUS - ISSUES FOR PRAYER

Supporting legislative prayer at the Supreme Court of the United States - Members of the Prayer Caucus signed an amicus curiae brief submitted to the Supreme Court of the United States by the Family Research Council, asking the Court to reverse a decision by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Joyner v. Forsyth County, which heldthat the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners' prayer policy was unconstitutional because the prayers too often mentioned "Jesus."  The county's prayer policy was based on a model policy used by other city and county councils throughout the country that has been upheld by four other federal courts since 2009.  However, the Fourth Circuit held that in order to be constitutional, such prayers must not be "too sectarian."  The amicus curiae brief asks the Supreme Court to take up the case and overturn the Fourth Circuit's decision, in hopes that the Court will bring the ruling into alignment with decisions of other federal courts and our nation's historic legacy of permitting such prayer.

Working to protect the symbols and traditions of Christmas - Members of the Prayer Caucus are supporting H.Res.489, introduced by Congressman Doug Lamborn, which expresses the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected for use by those that celebrate Christmas.  Each year during the Christmas season, there are increasing efforts to remove religious symbols and references from the holiday.  H.Res.489 emphasizes that the First Amendment does not require bans on religious references to Christmas, and supports the use of these symbols by those who celebrate Christmas.

Urging Vanderbilt University to protect religious student groups - Congressman Randy Forbes, Co-Chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, led 22 Members of Congress in sending a letter to Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos of Vanderbilt University, urging him to ensure that the school's nondiscrimination policy is not being interpreted in a manner that discriminates against religious student groups.  Several religious student organizations at Vanderbilt University, including the Christian Legal Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, were placed on "provisional status" for requiring their student leaders to share the groups' religious beliefs.

Advocating for the inclusion of prayer in the tenth anniversary commemoration of the September 11th attacks - Congressman Forbes, Founder and Co-Chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, sent a letter to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg urging him to include prayer in the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Congressman Mike McIntyre, Co-Chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, lead 31 Members of Congress in sending a letter to Mayor Bloomberg echoing the call for the inclusion of prayer.  (Contributor: U.S. Congressional Prayer Caucus website)
