Greetings! Did you know that nearly 49 million people in the United States face hunger? September is National Hunger Action Month, and I encourage you to take action. There's a lot you can do to spread awareness about hunger in our communities and help our neighbors who are struggling with hunger: Host a food drive with your school, office, or community group; learn and spread the facts about hunger and food insecurity in Chicago or; volunteer at Lakeview Pantry or your local food pantry. Read more about what you can do during Hunger Action Month below, and take a look at the first issue of our new Advocacy and Education Newsletter. On an additional note, thank you to everyone who participated in this year's raffle! You raised over $21,000 for Lakeview Pantry. We're proud to announce Mary F., Bryan G., and Margaret O. as this year's winners. Congratulations to all of you, and thank you for continuing to support Lakeview Pantry! Sincerely, Gary Garland Executive Director |
September is National Hunger Action Month. This is your opportunity to join the fight and spread the word about hunger and its impact on children, the elderly, and the poor. What can you do to promote hunger awareness? Many food banks and pantries, including Lakeview Pantry, actively seek willing volunteers to assist with daily operations and distribution. Just a commitment of four hours of your time per week is a tremendous help to any agency. You can also do your part in other ways by posting and sharing hunger-related facts and stories among your social media friends and followers. The immeasurable power of social media can bring hunger awareness to the forefront to prompt change and ensure that no one ever knows hunger. Read more >>

Lakeview Pantry Welcomes Two Special Volunteers

Every August we bid a fond farewell to two of our volunteers who have completed a year of service, 40 hours per week, while learning more about our mission. We then welcome two new to the Lakeview Pantry fold who are more than eager to assume the duties of their predecessors. This year we are happy to receive another set of volunteers from the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and the Amate House.
Elizabeth McFadden comes to us through the Amate House, a young adult volunteer program of the Archdiocese of Chicago that fosters personal, professional, and spiritual development among its participants. Elizabeth is originally from Cincinnati, OH and is a recent graduate of Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and hopes to apply what she learns while volunteering to her future graduate studies. After reading through all of her site options, Elizabeth selected Lakeview Pantry as one of her top assignments. "I was thoroughly impressed with Lakeview Pantry. I wanted to work [here] because of its emphasis on respecting the dignity, privacy, and worth of the clients while effectively and efficiently meeting their needs."
