Greetings!

We hope you have been taking advantage of all the great neighborhood energy that is synonymous with the greatness of Chicago!  Lakeview Panty has been active in many nearby street fests from Northalsted Market Days to the Roscoe Village Burger Fest.  You only have a few more opportunities to enjoy the best our neighbors have to offer, so I would encourage you to enjoy Chicago!  See us at  the Lakeview East Festival of the Arts on September 8-9, 2012.

If you haven't purchased your lucky raffle ticket, we still have them available!  Tickets are $50 each and only 500 tickets will be sold, and the winning tickets will be drawn on Friday, September 7.  Your gift will go a long way in helping our neighbors in need.  You can purchase raffle tickets on our websiteBe sure to enter "raffle tickets" in the comments section.

Thank you for all your support this summer!  We are excited about what we've accomplished, and we are equally enthusiastic about our upcoming schedule of events for the fall.

Chicago Spirit Brigade Raises $3,400 for Lakeview Pantry!

The Chicago Spirit Brigade showed its fundraising spirit at the Northalsted Market Days held August 11-12.  The fundraising organization selected Lakeview Pantry as this year's beneficiary of their two-day fundraising efforts. After each performance, CSB encouraged attendees to fill their "spirit buckets".  Lakeview Pantry not only received 100% of the proceeds from their performances, but CSB also matched the proceeds by an additional 25%.  In total, CSB raised $3,400 for LVP.

Lakeview Pantry is grateful to the Chicago Spirit Brigade for its commitment to our mission.  Our partnership is long-lasting, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in the years to come.

Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels have been a feasible housing option for many of America's low-income citizens since the late 19th century.

From early 1970s to 1997, Chicago lost nearly 40,000 SRO units. Losses have decreased since 1994 when non-profit organizations began buying and managing SRO hotels, but many are still closing like the Belair, Sheffield House and Ambers Hotel that closed in the last two years alone.  Read more...

Stories from Morocco: Part Two
By Erin Stephens

This is the second part of a two-part blog series about Erin Stephens' fellowship in Morocco.

From Rabat, we took a train to Tangier and had the opportunity to meet the mayor of this coastal city. In addition to wonderful conversations, we spent a couple nights here, explored the city, ate delicious food, and enjoyed the absolute beauty of their coastline.

After Tangier, our next stop was Chefchaouen. We drove through the Rif Mountains from point to point. The canyons were beautiful. Similar to each town and region in the States, each town and region in Morocco has its own identity. In Chefchaouen, they are focusing on the promotion of the local heritage and ecological development, to preserve the beautiful and picturesque environment that surrounds it.  Read more...

Lakeview Pantry Honors its Volunteers

Lakeview Pantry recently recognized its volunteers at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Party held on Monday, July 23, 2012 at Lincoln Hall. The Pantry volunteers are a dedicated group with a passion for promoting the organization's mission of feeding its hungry neighbors and fighting poverty in Lakeview. With over 120 volunteers in attendance, the gala was fun filled and highly energetic.

Each year, a volunteer of the year is selected.  This year's Volunteer of the Year is Chris Simek. "She never says no!"  Chris, who volunteers several times per week, has been instrumental in the transition to Salesforce, a client management system that has greatly facilitated the intake process. With her extensive knowledge of the software program, she has been a leader in that capacity and is sought after by other volunteers for guidance and information.  Read more...

Thank You to the Cubs Wives and Meijer

The Chicago Cubs Wives and Meijer hosted its 10th annual Wrigley Field Food Drive on Saturday, August 11. The event has yielded over 121,000 pounds of food for Lakeview Pantry since its inception in 2003.

As an incentive, fans who donated at least $20.00 or 10 pounds of food received an autographed 5×7 photo of a Cubs player.

The food drive, which coincided with the home game against the Cincinnati Reds, produced a large return of funds and food items for client distribution.  Thank you to the Cubs Wives and Meijer for continuing to support Lakeview Pantry.
