June 2012

Greetings!

A big thank you to everyone who supported last week's 50 for Food matching gift pledge.  You helped us reach the $20,000 mark of our $50,000 goal.  With just six days left, we need everyone's continued support.  If you have not had a chance to join the 50 for Food party, click here.  Please share this event with friends and family as well.  Thank you!

With less than a week to go, today, tomorrow, and Sunday will be my last chance to put in some serious miles, and then we are set for next Thursday!  I thank everyone who has sent helpful tips on making the walk more comfortable.  If you want to send additional ideas, please email me.  My wife has warned me that the bugs are heavy and active on the Robert McClory Bike Path where I will spend most of the first day.  Let me know what your favorite insect repellant is.

I will send updates via Twitter and Facebook as often as I can and throughout my walk.  Thank you for keeping Lakeview Pantry, those we serve, and me in your thoughts!

Gary Garland

Executive Director

Vanishing SRO Hotels Provide Critical Homes for
Chicago's Working Poor

By Sreya Sarkar

Single-Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels have provided shelter for low-income Chicagoans since the late 19th century and today play an important role in reducing homelessness. But many of the hotels are closing because according to the owners they are too expensive to maintain. The land is being mostly sold to developers. Last year two SRO hotels in Lakeview, the Belair and the Sheffield House, closed along with the Ambers Hotel on Belmont Avenue last month. Only a few SRO hotels remain in the area.  Read more

Big Day at Jewel!  We Need Volunteers!

Once again our friends at Jewel have extended a helping hand.  Thanks to store manager Ken Kugler, the Jewel located at 2940 North Ashland Avenue will be hosting a food drive
on Saturday, June 30 from 8:00am-4:00pm.

"This drive should be huge," says Lothar Greski, Outreach Coordinator at LVP.  I've had conversation with... the store manage; he thinks this will be one of his busiest days."  What a great day for LVP!

If you or your religious group, school, or other organization would like to assist us, please contact Lothar Greski at 773.525.1777x12.
