Greetings!
 | Gary Garland
|
As most of you may know, I have decided to celebrate my 50th birthday in a somewhat unorthodox style. In lieu of balloons and cake, I have been training for a 50 mile walk to spread hunger and poverty awareness. On June 21, I will begin the 3 day "50 For Food" walk from my home in Kenosha WI to the front door of Lakeview Pantry in Chicago!
My hope is to raise $50,000 for Lakeview Pantry and its mission of feeding and empowering neighbors in need. We have gotten off to a great start, and we plan to continue with our current high-energy momentum in promoting the walk to ensure its success. You, a valued supporter, can help by both becoming a sponsor and promoting the event through your own social media networks. The "50 For Food" event is posted on Facebook, and we are Tweeting daily using hashtag #50forfood. For all you Facebookers and Tweeters, I don't have to explain the power of a "share" and a "retweet".
We have an exciting and eventful summer ahead of us! You can stay fully abreast of my progress by following Lakeview Pantry on both Twitter and Facebook; I will be posting updates during my trek to the city.
If you'd like to walk for hunger awareness and Lakeview Pantry, check out the Greater Chicago Food Depository's 27th Annual Hunger Walk on June 23, 2012. We would love to see as many walkers as possible participate in this event on behalf of Lakeview Pantry! Please contact Mary Pat at (773) 525-1777 x25 or marypat@lakeviewpantry.org for more information and to register.
Sincerely,
Gary

Filling the Gap Between Manufacturing Jobs and Workers
There are about 600,000 manufacturing jobs nationwide that are unfilled including 28,000 in Illinois. In fact, chemical manufacturing is the leading industry in the state followed by food manufacturing and machinery manufacturing. With unemployment rate in Illinois hovering around 9 percent, why aren't the unemployed filling these manufacturing jobs? Read more...

Volunteers Needed
Lakeview Pantry has many donation pick-ups throughout the week and
we could use volunteer drivers. Volunteers would need to be comfortable driving our vans (they are Ford cargo vans) and have a good driving record. This is also a pretty physical task, moving around lots of bags and boxes of produce, bread and much more. Think of it like a free gym membership!

"50 For Food" is in full swing
Gary Garland, Executive Director of Lakeview Pantry, is taking a different approach to ending hunger and poverty this summer. Mr. Garland will walk 50 miles from his home in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to Lakeview Pantry in Chicago, Illinois, from June 21 through June 23 in an effort to increase awareness about hunger and poverty in Lakeview. Mr. Garland's one-man march, dubbed 50 for Food, is set to raise $50,000 for Lakeview Pantry and its emergency food distribution and case management programs.
Mr. Garland explains, "There about 110,000 Chicagoans who live in Lakeview and 10,000 of them-including children, veterans, and families-are food insecure. This walk will take me through three counties in two states. In those counties many people are struggling in poverty. Our goal with 50 for Food is to raise more awareness about this alarming statistic and ask Chicagoans to support Lakeview Pantry by sponsoring my walk. This walk isn't about me. It's about the thousands of neighbors who don't know where their next meal is coming from on any given day. Lakeview Pantry's tagline is Food for Today, Hope for Tomorrow. And the walk is more about solutions, over problems. Hope over hoplessness (Despair?) One hundred percent of the event proceeds will fund our programs and operations." Read more
