Was George Washington a Racist?

It's Black History Month in America.  Some people wonder if America's founders were racist. In death, George Washington was clearly not a racist.  During his life, he owned slaves, first given him when he was around 12 or 14 years of age. At the time, Virginia state law forbade slaves from being freed.  George Washington nearly went broke caring for his slaves before America's revolution.  He freed all of his slaves at his death. He did not separate their families - ever.

George Washington realized the destructiveness of dividing a nuclear family to weaken and control them.  Our American Indian brothers and sisters consider that earlier practice to be an altered state of genocide.  More than 100 slaves gained freedom at George Washington's death.  He lived with, cared for, and fought for freedom and liberty with African Americans. He clearly weakened the institution of slavery and reversed it for those he freed.
