The Quest for Balance

Airing Live: Monday, May 7, 2012 at 8pm

How can adolescents cope with anxiety to thrive personally and academically? With perceived expectations to be valedictorian, varsity athlete, editor of the newspaper, best friend and beloved family member, balance seems unattainable for many students. Teens must learn to juggle many responsibilities and avoid pitfalls at a young age. Join the experts as they delineate how students can set reasonable limits and effective expectations to reduce stress and promote personal wellness. Imbibe strategies for striking a healthy balance.

This program is aimed at parents of kids 13-18 years old

The Effects of Alcohol and other Drugs on the Adolescent Brain

April 12, 2012 7pm @VFMS

Speaker: Ken Thompson, M.D., FASAM; Medical Director, Caron Treatment Centers

Adolescence can be a time of experimentation with drugs and alcohol. Unfortunately, it is also a time that the brain is still developing. Early drug and alcohol use raises the chance of persisting neurological changes and has a fourfold or greater risk of addiction developing as compared to an adult brain. Dr. Thompson will discuss the current neuroscience of substance use and addiction and its relevance to the adolescent drug and alcohol user. Chilling evidence supports the need for early intervention and not just accepting drug and alcohol use as a phase that kids go through. Teens welcome to attend.
