Workplace "Uh-Ohs"

As much as we'd all like a guarantee that there will be calmer days ahead...that's probably NOT going to happen. Such is life in the 21st century.

In this issue, we've tried to anticipate a few things that might befall you or your organization, and then provide tools that will help when the "Uh-Oh" comes.
PNGUh-Oh #1:  Ideas and people that take us out of our comfort zone

As human beings, many of us avoid people we perceive as "different." When we encounter a person who speaks with a foreign accent or has an opposing point of view, we tend to steer clear of them. It just seems easier to hang out with people we easily understand and who "get" us. The problem is, when we don't seek and consider input from a variety of sources, our limited view of the world undermines problem solving and innovation. Learning to communicate through differences is a key skill in today's world.  Here's a helpful "How to Talk to Anyone" Guide.

Recommended Training Resource: In The Uh-Oh Syndrome, Dr. Steve Robbins uses humor, story-telling and science to explain why we love our comfort zones and what we can do to overcome these tendencies in order to become more open-minded and inclusive.

Uh-Oh #2: Workplace bullies. (They're everywhere!)

Recent studies have shown that bullying is very prevalent in today's organizations (1/2 of the U.S. workforce reports having been bullied, or witnessed bullying, on the job.). But what does that mean exactly? What is it that bullies DO? This handout outlines the differences between bullying and harassment. Making this distinction is the first step towards helping people know what bullying is, so they can confront it in themselves or others.

Recommended Training Resource: Preventing Workplace Bullying is the brand-new program that teaches people how to recognize and respond to bullies at work (whether the bully is a co-worker, subordinate or leader).

Uh-Oh #3: Something you hoped wouldn't happen...JUST happened!

No organization is immune to the unexpected. Be it the loss of an important client or a sudden systems failure, at one point or another, disaster will strike. The good news is that there are certain things you can do to minimize an event's negative impact. See these
5 Things Great Teams Do To Succeed in Challenging Times.
