PSAD NEWS E-Zine Press Release

Hi Everyone,

Please help get the word out to the deaf community and family members, interpreters, deaf or interpreter list serves, etc. so that we can ensure the deaf community experience is captured.

This study has been in the works for many years. It is only now with current technology that we can attempt to capture the disability and deaf abuse experience with a very large sample.

It is my hope that the deaf community and those in the lives of the deaf community are recognized and counted.

Those leading the study are national experts in the areas of child abuse and violence against children and adults with a disability. I cannot speak more highly of those involved and know that the results will be used to help shed real data on the prevalence and experiences of children and adults with disabilities and will help to shape public policy and education requirements for those responding to victims/survivors of abuse.

Please help spread the word for the deaf community.

Thanks,

When disability and abuse intersect, we take action.

Dick Sobsey Joins

National Survey Team

The Disability and Abuse Project is pleased to announce that Professor Richard (Dick) Sobsey has joined its National Survey Team. Professor Sobsey, currently a consultant to the Project, will now serve as the Principal Survey Analyst for the National Survey.

The National Survey on People with Disabilities was released on May 1, 2012. It is the first survey of its kind to collect data from people with disabilities, their families, and professionals working with them, about incidents and awareness of abuse of adults and children with disabilities, and system responses to such abuse.

In the first three weeks since its release, more than 2,800 people have taken the survey. The survey focuses on abuse of people with all types of disabilities across the lifespan.

"We are thrilled that someone of Dick Sobsey's caliber, competence, and dedication has joined our National Survey Team," said Dr. Nora J. Baladerian. Dr. Baladerian is the Director of the Disability and Abuse Project.

"Dick Sobsey not only has an excellent reputation in academia, he has a personal commitment to the issues being addressed by our Project," added Jim Stream. Jim is the Principal Consultant to the Project and Executive Director of The Arc of Riverside County.

Jim Stream and Dr. Nora Baladerian developed the National Survey on Abuse of People with Disabilities.

Dick Sobsey will assist the Project in interpreting the results of the survey. He and other members of the National Survey Team will collaborate together to identify ways to use the results in a variety of educational, policy, and advocacy efforts.

The Disability and Abuse Project focuses on physical,

sexual, and emotional abuse of people with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

Our mission is to identify ways to reduce the risk of abuse, to promote healing for victims, and to seek justice for those who have been victimized.

The areas in which we take action include: public awareness, education and training, policy development, law enforcement, and professional consulting.
