Action Alert: Support Ind. School For The Deaf, Oppose HB 1367
The NAD also asks that everyone call and/or email Indiana Senators and ask them to oppose Indiana State House Bill 1367. The bill would remove the outreach center currently housed at the Indiana School for the Deaf, terminate all staff working in that center, and recreate a new outreach center separate from the school. HEAR Indiana is the major proponent of this bill.

Remembering Chuck Baird: Artist Of Life The National Association of the Deaf mourns the passing of Chuck Baird, an extraordinary artist who showed the beauty of Deaf culture and American Sign Language (ASL) through his amazing artwork. Chuck Baird passed away on February 10, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. His life and work is a testimony to his talents, imagination, and creativity.

Bernard Bragg Perform to "The World Is My Stage" Sat, Feb. 25 The legend is back! Come and see Bernard Bragg perform at Gallaudet University on February 25, 2012, at the Elstad Auditorium at Gallaudet University. All proceeds will generously benefit the NAD Law and Advocacy Center as well as the Gallaudet University Bernard Bragg Chair in Theater Arts. This show is entirely Bernard Bragg: conception, writing, production, performance and all. Tickets are $15 for the public and $10 for students with ID.

FCC Releases Internet Protocol Captioning Rules On Friday, January 13, 2012 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released rules governing the closed captioning requirements for video programming delivered using Internet protocol (IP). This Report & Order also includes rules on the closed captioning capabilities of certain apparatus on which consumers view video programming. These rules were issued pursuant to the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010 (CVAA) and explain how the FCC will apply the CVAA sections related to IP captioning.

Call for Workshop Proposals The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is seeking proposals for exciting, informative and forward-looking education, training and public policy presentations at the 51st Biennial NAD Conference. Traditionally, biennial national conferences have welcomed education and training workshops on a variety of topics, with tracks that are tied to the principles of self-determination, self-representation and self-expression that resulted in the establishment of the NAD in 1880 and guides its work to this day.

NAD Submits Comments To Senate Committee Regarding ADA And Transportation The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) met on November 17th to discuss "The Americans with Disabilities Act and Accessible Transportation: Challenges and Opportunities." This event largely focused on people with mobility barriers to transportation; however, at least two witnesses mentioned that deaf and hard of hearing people need visual access to aural information. NAD Demands Access To The Movies At Landmark Theatre The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), along with two law firms, Stein & Vargas and Chason, Rosner, Leary & Marshall, LLC, brought a lawsuit against Silver Cinemas Acquisition Company for failure to provide captioned movies in violation of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Call for Bylaws Amendment Proposals Individual and organizational affiliate members of the NAD may submit proposed amendments to the NAD Bylaws, using the Proposed NAD Bylaws Amendment Form provided. Proposed changes to the NAD Bylaws will be presented to and voted upon by official delegates at the 51st Biennial NAD Conference. Deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Use of official form is required. Late or incomplete submissions will not be accepted.
