Private school/homeschool deduction

Additional Information

Info for parents:

This is the one program available to current parents. You may be eligible for a deduction based on education expenditures paid for each dependent child who is enrolled in a private school or is homeschooled.

Dependent child qualifications

  •   Your dependent child must be eligible to receive a free elementary or high school education (K-12 range) in an Indiana school corporation;
  •   You must be eligible to claim the child as a dependent on your federal tax return;
  •   The child must be your natural or adopted child or, if not, you must have been awarded custody of the child in a court proceeding making you the court appointed guardian or custodian of the child.

Education expenditure

This refers to any expenditures made in connection with enrollment, attendance, or participation of your dependent child in a private elementary or high school education program. The term includes tuition, fees, computer software, textbooks, workbooks, curricula, school supplies (other than personal computers), and other written materials used primarily for academic instruction or for academic tutoring, or both. The term does not include the delivery of instructional service in a home setting to your dependent child who is enrolled in a school corporation or a charter school.

A "private elementary or high school education program" means attendance at a nonpublic school (including a private school, a parochial school and a homeschool) in Indiana that satisfies a child's obligation for compulsory attendance at a school.

The obligation for "compulsory attendance" means a child must be in attendance in a school (public and/or private) for a minimum of 180 days in a calendar year.

No deduction will be available based on a child who attends school for a period of less than 180 days in a calendar year.

Figure your deduction.

If you made an unreimbursed education expenditure during 2011 your deduction is:

  •   (1) $1,000; multiplied by(2) the number of qualified dependent children for whom you made education expenditures.
Example. Greg and Constance have three children ages 7, 9 and 11. The two oldest children attend a private school. The youngest child attends the neighborhood public school. The parents purchased schoolbooks for all three children. They will be eligible for a $2,000 deduction (the youngest does not qualify as he attends a public school).

Note: A qualifying child may be claimed for this deduction only once per year. For example, if a husband and wife are married and filing separately, whichever parent is eligible to claim the child as a dependent for exemption purposes is eligible to claim this deduction. How to report the deduction: If the private school or homeschool is registered with the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), enter the school's name and identifying number assigned by the IDOE.

Examples.

  •   On Schedule 2 line 11a enter "XYZ Homeschool 019999Z" in the "Enter deduction name" box, followed by code no. 626 and the amount of the deduction.* If the school is not registered with the IDOE, just enter the name "XYZ Homeschool" in the "Enter deduction name" box, followed by code no. 626 and the amount of the deduction.

If the school has no designated name, enter "private school/homeschool" in the "Enter deduction name" box, followed by code no. 626 and the amount of the deduction.

For more information about this deduction, see Income Tax Information Bulletin #107 at www.in.gov/dor/3650.htm.

LITURGICAL SCHEDULE for  2-27 - 3-2

First Week of Lent

Sunday Readings   Genesis 9:8-15       1st Peter 3:18-22     Mark 1:12-15

Noah endured the 40 day devastation of the flood. In a similar way, the Spirit today drives Jesus into the forty-day trial of the desert. Satan conspires to make Jesus compromise his relationship as Son toward his Father. But Jesus remembers how the flood ends with God's promise.   The temptations make Jesus only more certain of his Sonship. Through our trials the Father's care shines. (Magnificat, 2012)

MORNING PRAYER will be prayed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings this week at 7:30 A.M. in the chapel.

ALL-SCHOOL LENT RECONCILIATION: will be held on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at 9:30 A.M. in the gym.

ROSARY FOR LIFE: will be prayed on Thursday morning at 7:30 A.M. in the chapel.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS: will be prayed on Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. in the chapel.

LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT

This year during Lent, we have been asked by St. Mary's Catholic Church to support one of their ministries, St. Martin de Porres. This ministry is planning a huge Easter Party for all of the children in the Soup Kitchen and in the surrounding St. Mary's area. Last year they had over 350 children and they expect even more this year. We can help by collecting bags of individually wrapped EASTER candy to be distributed to the children - please make every effort to buy EASTER candy - not regular candy! Starting Ash Wednesday, we will be collecting individually wrapped EASTER candy right up to spring break. There will be a big basket outside the campus ministry office where you can deposit your candy! Thank you for your generous Luers Spirit!

REGISTRATION FOR THE 2012-13 SCHOOL YEAR

Current Underclassman

New this year! All parents must register their students on one of the following days:

  • March 13 between 1:00 - 4:00 P.M.
  • March 14 between 4:00 - 8:00 P.M.
  • March 17 between 9:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.

These appointments are drop-in at your convenience - no appointment necessary. Information on the financial aid available at BLHS will be provided at registration.

Preparation for Underclassman Registration has already begun in the classrooms:

  • Current juniors. During the month of February, Mrs. Handel will meet individually with all juniors to select next year's classes.
  • Current freshmen/sophomores. During the week of March 5th, guidance will assist freshman and sophomore students in selecting next year's classes.
  • Note: If your sophomore or junior is interested in Anthis, please have him/her talk with a guidance counselor soon. Spots at Anthis are limited, depending on your district of residence.
  • Copies of your student's selections will be sent home for parent review, and must be signed and returned during Underclassman Registration. If necessary, refer to the Guidance page on the Bishop Luers website for the Curriculum Guide, which provides details of each course offering.

To be fully registered, a student must have on file:

  • $120 registration fee (after March 30th, the fee increases to $150.)
  • Financial Obligation Form (available to download in advance at www.bishopluers.org.); forms will also be available at registration.
  • Signed Course Selection Form (provided to you by your student.)

SAT Exams

Any junior planning to attend a four-year college or university should strongly consider taking one SAT or ACT test before August of his  senior year. Go to the Guidance Page at www.bishopluers.org for links to the testing websites and answers to FAQs regarding these important tests. Call your student's guidance counselor if you have further questions.

SAT Prep Class: Students may also consider registering for the ZAPS SAT prep course offered at Luers on April 16th and 17th from 6:00 - 8:30 P.M. Register online at zaps.com.

SAT Fee Waiver: Any junior or senior who is a Twenty-first Century Scholar or receives free/reduced lunch qualifies for an SAT fee waiver. If your student is planning to take the SAT soon, please have him/her stop by guidance for a waiver. Do not pick up a waiver until you are ready to register. Register for the SAT at www.collegboard.org.

AP Exams

It is time to begin planning for AP tests. All AP exams will be administered in May.

This year, the state of Indiana has committed to covering the fee for all math and science AP exams. Therefore, students taking AP Biology, AP Chemistry or AP Calculus do not have to pay for the exam.

Students wishing to take the AP Psychology, AP Government, AP U.S. History or AP English Literature exams must register by March 23rd. The cost is $87.00 per exam. Make your check payable to BLHS with the name of the exam in the memo spot. This will serve as your student's test registration.

On February 10th, AP coordinators across the country were informed that recently passed legislation has reduced the funding for the AP Test Fee Program, a federal program that provides grants to states to help fund AP Exam fees for low-income students. As a result, students who receive free/reduced lunch will pay $15 per exam.

The "Bulletin for AP Students and Parents 2011-2012: Your guide to the AP Program" will be distributed to your students soon, please ask  to see it.

COLLEGE FAIRS

College fairs are a great way for students to explore a variety of post-secondary choices. Admission representatives from colleges, technical and vocational schools, and the military make themselves available to students and parents to answer questions and offer important information about their programs and admissions requirements. Financial aid organizations will also be on hand. Admission and parking are free.

During the week of March 5th, representatives will be available at the following locations:

At IPFW: Northeast Indiana Regional College Fair featuring nearly 100 participating organizations will be held at IPFW on Tuesday, March 6th from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in the Walb Union. At 7:30 there will be a short meeting on helping students find financial aid. For more details, log onto www.fortwayneschools.org and click on College Fair.

International Student Host Families Needed

Bishop Luers High School is honored to participate each year in hosting international students in our school.  Each year we search for families who would be interested in hosting a student for either a semester or a year.  There is a $1,000.00 tuition credit per semester for a family willing to embark on this exciting adventure.  Currently, we have a 15 year old girl from Germany (interested in the first semester only) and a 16 year old girl from China (for the full year) looking for a host family for the 2012-2013 school year.  Please contact Jenny Andorfer at 456-1261 ext. or jandorfer@bishopluers.org  with questions or for more information.
