Senior Management Holds the Key to Gender Parity: It's the Culture, Stupid!

As founder and publisher of theglasshammer.com, I am proud to pen our 2000th article today and to share with you some of our latest thinking and around gender parity.  It seems appropriate to celebrate our 2000th article with a look at what components could play a major role in helping a critical mass of women to break the glass ceiling over the next few years. After all, if the last twenty years is closely examined, we would find only an incremental change in the number of women in leadership roles in major companies. (For example, as The Economist recently reported, while the proportion of working women has risen from risen from 48% to 64% since the '70s, women still only make up three percent of Fortune 500 CEOs.) Similarly, the advice given to women since the 1980s hasn't changed much either and has been predominantly to act more like men.

Women, Age, and Ambition - A Fresh Perspective

Recently More Magazine released the results of a survey on ambition, work/life issues, and other topics. According to the survey of 500 college educated women over 35, 43% of respondents said they were less ambitious now than they were ten years ago.  The headline that many news outlets and websites ran with was along the lines of "Women are Losing Ambition." Well, not exactly.

Managing Through the Holidays: Five Tips to Remember

We've now passed Thanksgiving - which means the holidays are right around the corner. And when sugarplums are dancing in your employees' heads come the holiday season, it can be hard for work to compete. An Accountemps survey published last year revealed that one-third of senior managers surveyed said their employees are less productive the week before a major holiday - and this season is full of them!  At the same time, this is the busiest time of year for most firms whose clients are clamoring to meet year-end goals. Here are five ways managers can get their people to produce top results through the holidays.

AAMC CAS-Chairs 12/4/11:

AAMC recently announced the launch of iCollaborative, a new online service that allows quick and easy sharing of innovative ideas, best practices, policies/guidelines, educational and assessment tools in development, and other valuable resources spanning the continuum of medical education, healthcare delivery, and research. The iCollaborative complements MedEdPORTAL as a venue for educators, providers, and researchers to post content in an open-access environment and without formal review. Users may utilize commenting features to drive discussions centered on resource development, refinement, and community-vetting.

The AAMC has launched a new web resource titled Curriculum Reports. It provides graphical interpretations of aggregate and historical curriculum-related information based on data collected annually by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The LCME data represents 100 percent of US medical schools and provides interesting perspectives of trends in medical education. Curriculum Reports also includes a section on Educational Technology that is based on data collected in the AAMC Group on Information Resources (GIR) annual survey.

AAMC STAT 12/5/11:

Academic Medicine Commentary Explores New Paradigm for Diversity  The December issue of Academic Medicine includes a commentary from AAMC Chief Diversity Officer Marc Nivet, Ed.D.  In the article, Nivet argues that a new paradigm for diversity and inclusion is emerging-Diversity 3.0-that reflects its deepening relevance to high-performing organizations and systems.  Diversity efforts are predominantly detached from the core mission and run parallel to many academic health centers' activities.  According to Nivet, institutions can reap the deeper potential of diversity by measuring and improving variables such as institutional climate, cultural competence, and responsiveness to community needs.  Ultimately, these efforts will attract top talent and support patient safety and quality improvement.

The Glass Hammer Newsletter 12/8/11:

Gender Intelligence: Why Different Wiring Means Better Business

Why, after decades of work to advance and empower women, have we yet to close the gender leadership gap? According to Marie Wilson, founder of The White House Project, one reason could be the brain. "I was convinced so much that if we just didn't the right things, trained women right - and I'm so tired of 'fixing women' - we could just make it work. When I met with Barbara Annis, we started to talk about what I had avoided my whole life - brain differences."  She added, "Wiring doesn't mean everything, but it means a lot."

Ten Inspiring Voices

Today we're celebrating our 2000th post, by reflecting on the things we've learned while working to inform, empower, and inspire women to break the glass ceiling.  As Editor of The Glass Hammer, one of the most fulfilling parts of my job is the opportunity to interview extraordinary women and tell their stories through our profile series like Voices of Experience, Movers and Shakers, and Intrepid Woman.

"If you don't fail, you're not pushing hard enough." Anne Stevens

Anne Stevens is no stranger to taking the helm at top companies worth millions - and billions - of dollars.  She went from being the first female executive VP of Ford Motor Company to COO before retiring as one of the highest-ranking women in the automotive field.  Next, she made a career switch to technology, as CEO of Carpenter Technology to her current role as CEO of SA IT Services, a leading national technology company.  She's also held positions at Exxon Mobil Corporation and had been featured on Fortune's "Most Powerful Women" list four times. But if you think this 62-year-old mother of two (and grandmother of four) is looking to slow down anytime soon, think again. Read LittlePINKBook's interview with her.
