ELAM News to Know

Farewell and thank you...

Richard V. Homan MD, President and Annenberg Dean at Drexel University College of Medicine, announced that he'll be leaving Drexel, after more than five years, to become Provost and Dean at Eastern Virginia Medical School on November 1, 2011.  Diane, Page, and all of us feel truly fortunate to have worked under Dean Homan.  From the time he arrived in 2005, Rick made clear that ELAM held a special place in his heart and he often mentioned the ELAM Program in his remarks both within and outside of the school.  He nominated Drexel women faculty for ELAM, mentored them, and attended the Forum for each.  He also served proudly as a member of the "Ann Preston School of Medicine" panel for the fellows' presentations of their cases.  Many ELAMs have met Rick and others have seen him in the ELAM video on our website.

In the last Strategic Plan for Drexel Medicine, ELAM (as part of the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership) was one of the five "pillars" of the plan.  The new ELATE program (Executive Leadership in Academic Technology and Engineering), which is about to launch the application process for its inaugural class, is a direct outcome of the strategic plan and Dean Homan's vision.  Even before Rick came to Drexel, he was a staunch ELAM advocate, having nominated several candidates in his former position as Dean at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's medical school.

We deeply appreciate the many ways our Dean has supported us and wish Rick all the best in his new position.  And we know that there are several ELUMs at EVMS who will welcome him warmly.

At the same time, we extend a welcome to Daniel V. Schidlow MD as our new interim Dean.  Dr. Schidlow is Professor of Pediatrics, Pharmacology and Physiology; Chair of the College of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics; and, Physician in Chief at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.  He, too, has been an ELAM supporter for many years and has sponsored the nomination of several Pediatrics faculty to ELAM. Daniel Schidlow also has another link to the ELAM Program:  His wife, Sally Rosen, has been ELAM faculty for many years and was named the inaugural ELAM Senior Scholar some years ago.

Congratulations to the class of 2011-2012 for making it through the first session of ELAM! We had an excellent week getting to know the new Fellows and reconnecting with the numerous ELUMs who returned as facilitators and advisors. We look forward to bringing the class together again in December!
